The Weekly Round-Up for June 7 to 11
Here are the entertainment news items for this week:
NEWS
Glee is the word and the show seems to be taking over every facet of the industry with countless merchandise items available everywhere. The latest marketing item for the series will be coming in book form through Little Brown Books for Young Readers. Five authorized books based on the hit show will be published with the first, a prequel dubbed Glee: The Beginning will hit bookshelves in August just in time of the premiere of the show’s second season. Plot details for the books have not been released.
TV SERIES NEWS
Tim Matheson and Garrett Dillahunt will reprise their roles on Burn Notice later this season.
Not only will D. W. Moffat (Friday Night Lights) be guest starring in an upcoming episode of the new show Covert Affairs but Lauren Holly (NCIS) will also.
The next season of Torchwood will be seen on Starz, getting a 10-episode order slated to air in the summer of 2011. Several new characters are expected to come on board, joining John Barrowman and Eve Myles.
Andy Whitfield, the lead actor in the Starz series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has been given a clean bill of health (from his non-Hodgkin lymphoma treatment) and is expected to appear in two of the upcoming six prequel episodes for the series and he will be back for season two of the series.
AMC is airing a sneak preview of the new series Rubicon this Sunday after the finale of Breaking Bad. Check your local listings for air time and expect the actual debut of the series on August 1.
Jesse Williams, who plays Dr. Jackson Avery, has upgraded to a series regular on Grey’s Anatomy for the upcoming fall season. In addition, Sarah Drew (April) has been added as a series regular as well.
FOX has once again pulled the plug on the series Past Life. The show’s remaining episodes were to air this summer, but with two unaired episodes left, the network will not air them, showing encores of The Good Guys instead.
BBC America will air the six-part psychological thriller Luther later this year. The mini-series stars Idris Elba (The Losers) as a brilliant but emotionally impulsive murder detective and Ruth Wilson (Jane Eyre and The Prisoner) as a beautiful multiple-murderess who evades his grasp.
The USA Network has extended both Burn Notice and Royal Pains to 18 episodes each for this season with both summer finales to air on August 26. Both shows will be back in the winter with their final 6 episodes.
Due to medical reason, the executive producer of In Plain Sight, John McNamara, has taken a leave of absence and that will shorten the series run this summer to only 13 episodes, ending the show on June 30 with a cliffhanger.
DEVELOPMENT NEWS
The FOX drama pilot Breakout Kings, which did not receive a series order by the network, may be heading to A&E as the cable station is in talks to possibly pick up the series.
The USA Network has picked up the buddy cop comedy pilot Common Law, which centers on cops Wes Mitchell and Travis Marks, who have a problem — each other — so their captain sends them to couples therapy.
BBC One has picked up the comedy pilot Accidental Farmer, which is to star Ashley Jensen (Ugly Betty) as a high-powered executive who, after catching her boyfriend in bed with another woman, impulsively buys a run-down farm in Yorkshire, among other things with his credit card.
BOX OFFICE NEWS
Sandra Bullock will appear in another movie with Ryan Reynolds. The movie is tentatively to be called Most Wanted, but no description of the storyline has been released yet and this movie could be in production quite some time from now due to other projects by both actors.
Stanley Tucci will appear in the upcoming movie Captain America: The First Avenger, playing Dr. Abraham Erskine, the German scientist behind Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that created the Super Soldier: Captain America. He joins a big cast that includes Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving and Hayley Atwell.
Justin Theroux will star alongside Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston in the upcoming comedy movie Wanderlust about a couple’s (Rudd and Aniston) attempt to escape the trappings of the city for a different kind of life. Ken Marino also stars.
Mekhi Phifer, Greg Germann and Jeffrey Tambor are joining Patrick Dempsey and Ashley Judd in the movie Flypaper, which is set around a bank that, due to unfortunate timing, finds itself simultaneously besieged by two different sets of thieves.
Stephen Moyer (True Blood), Stana Katic (Castle) and Odette Yustman (Cloverfield) will star in the movie The Double, which centers on a retired CIA operative (Richard Gere) forced to partner with a young FBI agent (Topher Grace) to hunt down the killer of a senator in Washington.
Stephen Moyer, Travis Fimmel (Tarzan and The Beast), Lee Majors (the Six Million Dollar Man himself) and Bruce Dern [among others] have joined the cast of the movie The Big Valley based on the classic 1960’s TV series.
The Fright Night remake that is being made will star David Tennant (Doctor Who) and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Kick-Ass) along with Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell and Toni Collette. The story about a Las Vegas teen (Yelchin) who is convinced that his new neighbor (Farrell) is a vampire when his mother falls under the spell of the charming bloodsucker. Tennant will play master showman Peter Vincent who seems to be the only one who believes Yelchin, but despite claims of vast vampire knowledge, he’s just a clueless stage magician putting on a show. Mintz-Plasse will play Evil Ed, Yelchin’s friend who feels slighted that Charlie has left his nerdy past behind and thus joins the vampire’s cause.
Bill Nighy will star in a 3-D adaptation of the 1980 novel by Peter Straub called Shadowland, which focuses on a young university student (a role which is uncast as yet) who is lured by a charismatic old gentleman into a world of magic, but is forced to decide whether or not to join the forces of evil to save the life of his best friend. Natalie Dormer (The Tudors) will also star.
News broke this week that the final installment of the Twilight saga – Breaking Dawn – will officially be split in two. Rumors have been rampant for quite some time of this possibility and fans can rest assured they will have more Bella, Edward and Jacob in their local cineplexes.
The remake of the 80’s classic movie Red Dawn looks to be in jeopardy because of MGM’s financial woes. The studio has withdrawn the project from release because it cannot currently afford to market or distribute it.
It has been confirmed that Geoffrey Rush will reprise his role of Captain Barbossa in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie – On Stranger Tides – that is set to star Johnny Depp.
Dania Ramirez (Heroes) will star alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the movie Premium Rush, which centers on a New York bike messenger who picks up an envelope at Columbia University to deliver. A dirty cop is desperate to get his hands on the envelope as well, and chases the bike messenger throughout the city.
MADE FOR TV MOVIES
Greg Grunberg (Heroes) and Kim Raver (Grey’s Anatomy) will star in the Lifetime movie Bond of Silence that will air this summer. The movie, inspired by a true story, is about a widow (Raver) whose husband Bob is mysteriously murdered while trying to quell a wild teenage house party on New Year’s Eve. Grunberg plays the detective who helps the widow uncover the secrets behind what really happened.
CASTING SCOOP
Julie Stiles will join the new season of Dexter as a mysterious woman who forms some sort of relationship with Dexter. She will appear in ten episodes of the upcoming season. Additionally, Maria Doyle Kennedy (The Tudors) has joined the cast of Dexter. And, Shawn Hatosy (Southland) will appear in several episodes of the Showtime series.
Freddie Prinze, Jr. will guest star in at least one episode of Psych, starring as an old friend of Shawn and Gus who was once a nerd.
John Seda (The Pacific) will guest star on Burn Notice as a disgruntled ex-Marine who now works as a killer for hire.
John Stamos will appear as Emma’s dentist boyfriend on upcoming episodes of Glee next season.
Idris Elba (The Losers) will be seen in the new Showtime comedy The C-Word, starring in four episodes.
Vinnie Jones (X-Men 2) has been added as a series regular for the new NBC drama series The Cape which is expected to air during mid-season of the 2010-2011 TV season. The series also stars David Lyons, Summer Glau and Keith David.
Balthazar Getty (Brothers & Sisters) will appear in an upcoming episode of the TNT summer series Rizzoli & Isles. This new show will debut on July 12 at 9 PM.
Barry Watson (Samantha Who and 7th Heaven) will guest star in an upcoming episode of Drop Dead Diva.
Aya Cash (Mercy) has replaced Alexandra Breckinridge in the FOX comedy Mixed Signals will is expected to air mid-season.
Brian Cox (Kings) will appear in a multi-episode arc in the new Showtime series The C-Word, which is set to debut on August 16.
Joanna Whalley (Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis) will star opposite Jeremy Irons in the Showtime period drama The Borgias.
Navi Rawat (Numb3rs) will appear in three episodes of Burn Notice, playing the girl next door who turns out to be anything but that.
Author Sara Shepard will make a cameo in the TV series based on her books: Pretty Little Liars. Her appearance will be in the July 20 episode.
RUMOR PATROL
Jason O’Mara (Life on Mars) is in talks to star in the Steven Spielberg FOX mid-season drama Terra Nova.
British comedian Matt Lucas is supposedly to appear in an upcoming episode of the FOX musicomedy Glee when it returns in the fall.
Actor Michael Fassbender (Hex and 300) has been linked to two projects: X-Men: First Class, possibly playing the younger version of Magneto and possibly the villain in the Spider-Man 4 movie.
In looks like Jennifer Garner and Nick Nolte are in talks to join the cast of the remake of Arthur, which is set to star Russell Brand, Helen Mirren and Greta Gerwig.

The movie Stonehenge Apocalypse will air on Syfy on Saturday, June 12 at 9 PM. The movie stars Misha Collins as a radio talk show host who tries to warn the world about cataclysms spurred by the titular ancient monument.
True Blood is back for another season starting on Sunday, June 13 at 9 PM on HBO. Check your local listings for additional airings over the next week.
