Pound Puppies, Strawberry Shortcake Returning to TV

By  |

When I was just a young TV watcher in the ’80s, Pound Puppies was one of my favorite cartoons. My brothers and I would watch the show on Saturday mornings, and “icky poo” is still a catchphrase we use. I even had a couple of the stuffed animals, rescued from “the pound”!

Now, more years later than I care to contemplate, Pound Puppies is returning to TV! The Hub, a Discovery and Hasbro-backed kids channel, is launching in October and announced that they’re producing a new version of Pound Puppies in addition to a new G.I. Joe cartoon and Family Game Night – basically an infomercial for Hasbro games. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

There are two original series from The Hatchery, the US indie founded by Loesch. Dan Vs. follows misanthropic Dan and sidekick Chris as they take on the frustrations of modern life. The other Hatchery series is horror anthology R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour. I was just a smidge too old for the R.L. Stine craze, but I remember when it hit.

The network also announced ten acquired series that will be making their US premiere. These include Decode’s Animal Mechanicals, Moonscoop’s Cosmic Quantum Ray and Henson series Fraggle Rock!

The other series are Deltora Quest (Dentsu), Maryoku Mummy (DQ Entertainment), Meerkat Manor (Oxford Scientific Films), Strawberry Shortcake (American Greetings), The WotWots (Weta Workshop), Twisted Whiskers (American Greetings) and Family Movie Night, a film strand with titles to be announced.

Will you take a walk down nostalgia lane with any of these shows? What other cartoons do you wish would be resurrected? I’d like to see Rose Petal Place return, and The Mysterious Cities of Gold.
