Music That Moves Me

By  |

As I’ve mentioned before, music is a big part of my life. As far back as I can remember music was always playing in my childhood home. It was either my brothers playing 70’s rock-n-roll on their bedroom stereo, my dad listening to country music in his basement workshop or my mom listening to church music in our kitchen (or singing while she cooked, cleaned or even planted her flowers).

I am so thankful for that early introduction into such diverse music as it truly made a difference in my life. It led me to play clarinet in my elementary school band, join the school chorus during my years in high school and become part of my church choir while I was a young adult. Since that time, music has become an essential part of my everyday life. I wake up to music in the morning, the radio is never off in my car and I listen to music all day at work via iTunes.

My musical taste, as you can imagine, varies greatly because of all those influences. I have an appreciation for music ranging from the big band sound of the 30’s and 40’s – especially “Moonlight Serenade” by Glenn Miller – the classics of the 50’s and 60’s – especially “Crazy” by Patsy Cline and anything by The Monkees – and the great sound of rock-n-roll from the 70’s – especially The Eagles and Journey.

Since I was a teenager in the 80’s, I am rather disinclined to admit what my favorites were. Seriously, what the frak were we thinking back then? But I can truthfully state I was hooked on Christian rock for a number of years with Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith and Mylon Levefre and Broken Heart being among my top favorites.

In the 90’s I discovered Sarah McLachlan and female-empowered music. My all-time favorite song is Sarah’s Possession from her album Fumbling Toward Ecstasy. Over the last (near) decade, and because of my move from the East Coast to the West Coast, I have been exposed to even more types of music thanks to the friends I have made here. I rediscovered my interest in contemporary Christian music; I learned about alternative music and found my way back to my roots in classic rock and country music. My journey in the music world has come full circle and it is all thanks to my friends and my family.

NGTV would love to hear what types of music you love to listen to.  Please make your comments below.
