Rise of the Blogger: When TV Addicts & Nice Girls Get Quoted
You know those ads for movies and TV shows that show quotes from critics? A couple of years ago I noticed that some of the, shall we say, less than critically acclaimed films coming out were using quotes from places like IMDb and blogs that aren’t known for hard-hitting critiques. Why bother using quotes at all if you have to pull them from obscure sources on the web? But times, they are a-changin’.
With the rise of semi-professional entertainment blogging, networks and studios are beginning to embrace the practice of using online sources in advertising for shows that are getting pretty good buzz from the professionals. And I don’t mean quotes from EW.com or Variety.com, I’m talking the Average Joe with an opinion. For example, our buddy Daniel, TV Addict and Nice Boy, is quoted alongside Entertainment Weekly and the LA Times in this ad for Fox’s upcoming Glee:
Daniel was tickled to see his words flashing before his eyes, and he’s worked hard to be taken seriously. (We happen to agree with his review of Glee, by the way. Can’t wait for the season to start!) I’ve also seen ads with quotes from MonstersAndCritics.com and
We are often given opportunities to preview shows here at NiceGirlsTV.com and post our own reviews. While we have yet to be quoted in an ad campaign, USA and TNT both tweeted posts of ours last week. It’s a start! We’ve also been interviewed by USA Today and Newsweek for our True Blood site and several outlets, including CNN, for our Chuck site. Lest this seem like I’m simply tooting our own horn, because you know I’d never do that!, there is a query to go with this: what do you think about the rise in blogger credibility? Or should I say, what do you think about the networks & studios wanting to give blogger’s credibility? What criteria do you look for when deciding whether to take a blogger’s review to heart?
And on that note, look for my review of the new webseries CTRL coming to a desktop near you tomorrow!
