“In Plain Sight”: A Different Feel to Season Two
Watching the first two episodes of season two of In Plain Sight, there was one thing that stood out for me. The utter selfishness of Brandi and Jinx Shannon. When the first season ended, Mary had been through quite a horrific ordeal. Things that may be occupational hazards, but they happened to her in rapid succession. In the premiere last week, we see Mary having a meltdown, but do we see Brandi show a single bit of caring for her sister? Does Jinx offer any mother-daughter warm fuzzies? Do either of them tell Mary, “Just go lie down and relax, we’ll take care of everything”? No. Nada. Nothing. Nill. Instead, Brandi can’t seem to walk across a room without Mary’s direction and instruction. Jinx wallows in self-pity and a bottle, totally unaware that Mary is even in the room. By the end of last week’s episode, I wanted to throw my jar of peanut butter and spoon at my television.
In “In My Humboldt Opinion”, Mary is followed around by a psychologist Shelly (played by Ali Marsh) who must evaluate Mary in order to reinstate her to active duty. After observing Mary dealing with work and home, she finally asks the questions that Mary needs to answer: when will you let go of your family and when will you just live your life. She also brings up the question of Mary’s father, which, as we know from interviews, is an issue that will be dealt with in this season. I think that Shelly represented the viewers in this episode. Finally saying what we’ve all been thinking. Mary’s answers set the us up for season two.
