SHADOWHUNTERS Recap: Raising Hell

By  |

Last night’s episode found Clary waking up from a bad dream, finding Jace there to comfort her. The only problem, it was really Simon. And, once again, she treats him like a brother when that is the last thing he wants from her. When is he just going to step up and tell her how he feels?

But, he does offer one helpful clue to Clary when she mentions the name Magnus, which was the name she heard her mother mention in her dream. Simon, of course, heard that name while he was being held by Camille the Vampire and that revelation, of course, sets the Shadowhunter team off in the direction of the most powerful warlock in the world.

After a quick tutorial from Hodge about Magnus’s 300 years of life, they learn that he values an antique 4-carot Ruby necklace that he gifted to his former lover – Camille (naturally the warlock and vampire were lovers??!!). They use that necklace to lure Magnus out of hiding in order for him to give back all of Clary’s memories.

For a brief moment it appeared that Clary would finally be able to find her mother – you’re expecting a “but” – – aren’t you? Well, you should. But, he doesn’t have her memories because he gave them to a memory demon. He did that as a precautionary measure should Valentine find him, he wouldn’t be able to torture the memories out of him. Good idea for Magnus but not a good idea to Clary.

As it turns out, though, Valentine’s men did track down Magnus and his supposedly well-hidden lair, killing many of his people; but the Shadowhunter team and Clary swooped in to save the day. Given that his lair was discovered, Magnus uses his advanced power to relocate all of them; and then reveals to Clary that she can summon the memory demon by drawing an elaborate Pentagram to draw him forth.

Shadowhunters Episode 4 Pentagram

Once the Pentagram is drawn, the unlikely team joins hands in order summon the demon, but the big catch is that each of them has to relinquish one memory of the person they love the most. For Isabelle that memory is her brother Alec, for Clary it is a memory of her missing mother and for Alec it is a memory of Jace. That revelation doesn’t sit well with Alec, who breaks the bond and nearly allows the demon to escape. But, you knew there was going to be another “but”, right?, Jace steps in the way to stop Alec from leaving, getting caught by the demon. While Alec and Izzy attempt to rescue Jace, it is up to Clary to make the tough choice: save Jace by killing the demon and losing all of her memories or allow Jace to be taken by the demon and maybe getting her memories back (if they could even contain the demon)…

Her obvious choice was…to save Jace’s life and give up retrieving her memories.

Elsewhere, Simon abruptly left the Institute – much to Clary’s deep dissatisfaction – returning home to an irate mother (how cool was it to see actress Christina Cox as Simon’s mom – some TV viewers will remember her from the vampire-themed series Blood Ties) and a very upset Maureen. Simon isn’t himself either (like we didn’t see that coming after the way he was seduced by Camille), but how soon will he, Clary and Shadowhunter team learn the truth about him. You don’t need a playbook on what is happening to him, right?
