THE LYING GAME: “O Twin, Where Art Thou?” Leaves Us Confused

By  |

The Lying Game returned this week with “O Twin, Where Art Thou?” and I am more confused now than ever. When we left the twins, there were a lot of questions, yes, but everything was in nice, neat little piles. Now, with the return of Annie Rebecca Sewell, I have no idea what’s going on at all. I mean, I thought Phyllis’s sister was Annie Hobbs, the twins’ mother. No? Well apparently not.

Charisma Carpenter steps nicely into the role of Rebecca Sewell, and fooled us all when we were expecting to see Annie Hobbs. But Rebecca has secrets of her own and they involve Alec and Ted. In fact, she made those good old boys a tad nervous with her announcement that she was back to stay. What’s that all about, wonders I? Her return was also not good news for Phyllis, who was completely loaded at Sutton’s party and welcomed Rebecca with a verbal bitch-slap before stalking off.

Meanwhile, the police find Sutton’s car in the lake and question Emma with Ethan beside her. Of course it had to be Dan doing the questioning, right? His suspicions immediately fall to his brother – what brotherly love, huh? Emma stumbles through a terrible excuse as to why her car ended up in the lake, but Ethan finally tells Dan that the whole thing was his idea and that he was the one who drove the car into the lake. Why didn’t Emma just come clean right there? Ethan tells her later that if she had told the police about her and Sutton, suspicion of the real Sutton’s disappearance would fall immediately on her and Ethan. He says it would look too much like Emma was too comfy in Sutton’s abundant life that she didn’t want to give it back to Sutton. So they keep the lie going.

Laurel has lost the bracelet Justin gave her and when she tells Justin, he is visibly upset. Even more upset when she tells him that her whole family knows that he gave it to her and that it belonged to his mother. It was found on her the day she died. There is definitely something very mysterious going on with Justin, and it became clear in this episode that it involves Ted. Is Justin blaming Ted for his mother’s death? When Ted “finds” the bracelet and returns it to Laurel, she wears it to the golf course where Ted and Justin are playing. Justin’s reaction seems more like he’s taunting Ted, but why?

Then there’s Thayer. He and Ethan are not getting along at all and Thayer plants a seed of suspicion against Ethan in Emma’s head. He is questioning where Ethan was between the time they left the cabin and when he arrived at the party. Emma starts to wonder if Ethan has something to do with Sutton’s disappearance after all. Did he get rid of her so that he wouldn’t lose Emma? Seems pretty un-Ethan-like to me, but it’s enough to keep the three bickering among each other. Until Emma gets the boys together and tells them that she needs them both if they’re ever going to find Sutton.

Now here is my speculation: what if the person in the back of Sutton’s car, the one that pops up and causes her to drive into the lake, is Annie Hobbs, and it is Annie who saves Sutton from drowning. Perhaps the two of them are in hiding somewhere while Annie tells Sutton what happened to her all those years ago. Perhaps Sutton sent that dress back to Emma with that cryptic message to “keep on being Sutton…or you’re next”. Maybe that’s not a threat but a warning from Sutton? Maybe she has discovered through Annie that Alec and Ted are very dangerous dudes and she needs time for something she is planning.

I’d love to know what you guys think of my theory!
