Pretty Little Liars: A Modern Day Pinocchio

Everyone knows the story of Pinocchio, a wooden puppet who’s only wish was to become a real boy. However, Pinocchio had a very bad habit of telling lies. Hmm, lies and secrets. Sound familiar?

Pretty Little Liars is a show about four modern day Pinocchios. I think there’s enough material to draw some comparisons between the stories.

Pinocchio was a wooden puppet with strings – ‘A’ certainly holds the strings on Aria, Hannah, Spencer and Emily. The lies alone hold strings on the residents of Rosewood.

Pinocchio was a liar who’s nose grew with each lie he told – very bad things are happening to the girls because of their secrets.

Pinocchio wished he was a real boy – each of the girls have their own desires: Aria wants Ezra; Hannah wants to feel safe; Emily wants acceptance and Spencer wants the security that Toby offers her. And all the girls wan to get to the bottom of the mystery that is ‘A’.

While it’s clear that the girls have trust issues, you can’t fault them when you see that their own parents have secrets as well. Much of the time they don’t pay attention to their daughters. And everyone wants something from someone else. Will the secrets that the girls carry ever be found out? I’ll be tuning in as ABC Family rolls out the new season every Tuesday night at 8/7 central.
