Good Witch Recap: “How to Make a Middleton Quilt”

There are only 10 days left for the wedding of the year to happen in the quaint town of Middleton on the Hallmark Channel favorite series Good Witch; and preparations were underway for the big event, especially the “Wish Quilt” that Cassie’s closets friends and family members are making for the happy couple. Ironically, making that quilt seemed to have a good effect on the makers too.

Here is the official synopsis of “How to Make a Middleton Quilt”:

“Grace, in a true Middleton tradition, enlists the help of the town in making a magical quilt that’s said to grant the wishes of the recipient. Meanwhile, Cassie and Sam learn even more about each other as secrets are revealed at their bachelor/ette parties.”

Making Wishes Come True

A generations-old tradition established by the one and only Elizabeth Merriwick, the “Wish Quilt,” was being assembled by her Cassie’s daughter and maid of honor Grace, cousin Abigail, daughter-in-law Tara, Mayor Martha Tinsdale, Sam’s assistant Eve and Cassie’s best friend Stephanie. According to legend the quilt grants wishes for the couple and ensures them a long, happy life together. But what wasn’t expected was the positive result that making the quilt had on all of the ladies involved in creating the touching gift for the soon-to-be-married couple.

Each of the ladies made wishes throughout the episode – some mundane, some unselfish and some very sweet – and all of them came true. While Sam kept believing, as each new wish was revealed to have come true, that it was Cassie’s ‘magic’ that helped those wishes come true, it just might have been more the magic of Middleton and the women’s love and friendship that played a hand in making those wishes come true.

We’re Having a Party

In an interesting twist on the bachelor and bachelorette parties, Sam spent his night with the ladies, learning how to make his favorite cake while Cassie was out with the boys at the Microbrewery, hustling the guys at a game of billiards. Despite the switch up on the traditional celebrations both of the nearly-weds seemed to really enjoy themselves. And both groups met back up at Grey House where the “Wish Quilt” was presented to them.

The 4 Somethings

As is tradition with weddings, the bride is to be presented with ‘something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.’ And while Martha was supposed to overseeing the collection of those items as a way to help Grace, it seemed that as the “Wish Quilt” was presented to Cassie and Sam that the ‘4 somethings’ were going to be completely missed. But, in true Cassie style, she found her ‘4 somethings’ right within the quilt.

Grace had found a handkerchief embossed with Elizabeth Merriwick’s initials in that old luggage crate of clothing belonging to their family’s ancestor, and while it wasn’t used as a square on the quilt, it was draped over one of the squares. That was her something old.

Martha had included brand new Middleton pins, featuring the latest logo for the town within the square that she created, which Cassie (and Sam) would be able to remove and wear on their own clothing anytime they wanted. That was her something new.

The antique hairclips which George had found to use for a pair of drapes that wouldn’t stay in place on one of the windows of Grey House was used to help situate the “Wish Quilt” for display. Those clips would be her something borrowed.

And, the remaining blue sewing thread that Grace gave to Martha to complete the “Wish Quilt” that Cassie slide inside the pocket square on the quilt holding the handkerchief would be held by Cassie as she walked down the aisle. That was her something blue.

The Return of an Old Friend

The episode had opened with Cassie talking about her old college friend Melanie Anderson (guest star Lauren Holly), and – ironically – Melanie showed up just as the “Wish Quilt” was presented to the couple. Cassie didn’t arrange the unexpected visit nor did Grace so maybe the magic of the “Wish Quilt” worked after all. Sure, it was revealed that Sam did a little investigative work, tracking Melanie down so that Cassie could have one of her oldest and dearest friends in town [albeit briefly as Melanie had to leave town on a humanitarian effort in Cambodia the next morning], making Cassie’s biggest wish come true. What about Sam, though? Did he get his wish? He sure did as he gets to marry Cassie.
