Black Lighting – Lawanda: the Book of Burial

It was a rough week in Freeland, and Black Lightning’s return is setting the good and the bad of Freeland to work.

After the death of Lawanda, Reverend Holt rallies his parishioners to march against the 100, despite the reluctance of Inspector Henderson and Jefferson. When Jefferson can’t convince the Reverend to call off the march, it looks like Black Lightning is going to have to step in to protect the marchers, whether he wants to or not.

Lady Eve (Jill Scott) made an appearance this week, and I loved her as a sugar sweet villain. She doesn’t want anything disrupting the flow of protection money, so she sends Tobias off to get the march and Freeland in hand.

Anissa is exploring her powers and mastering them, but other parts of her life are in turmoil. She’s pulling away from her family while she figures things out, and they’re worried about her distance. Anissa also starts straying from her relationship. When Chenoa sees Anissa with another woman, their already troubled relationship comes to an end. New romance and new powers could spell trouble for this budding hero.

Jefferson and Lynn are still struggling to find a new comfort with Black Lightning back on the streets. Lynn is concerned about what Jefferson’s return to Black Lightning means for the safety of the girls. Jennifer and Khalil’s relationship is deepening and they decide they’re ready to take things to another level. Jennifer is open with her parents about it, more open than they find comfortable. Though it takes them a beat, they’re trying to be supportive of their daughter’s decisions.

When the night of the march arrives, Gambi and Jefferson have done their best to protect the citizens of Freeland. Tobias has sent a gang member that’s looking to move up in the organization to attack the march, but Black Lightning steps in and shields the marchers from harm. Unfortunately, Syonide gets a couple shots in and hits Reverend Holt and Khalil. The Reverend is going to be ok, but Jennifer tells her family that Khalil’s spine was hit and he may not walk again.

Things feel pretty grim in Freeland right now, and it seems like Black Lightning isn’t the only one questioning whether or not he’s done the right thing by getting back on the streets. If this week is any indication, it’s gonna get worse before it gets better.
