MODERN FAMILY: Two Episodes For The Price Of One!

By  |

Modern family is back with a double dose premiere! Yay! I was so excited I actually made popcorn and was ready to get a much needed laugh on! Needless to say I laughed out loud several times and Modern Family didn’t disappoint. It was worth the long wait!

Episode 1- Suddenly, Last Summer

We begin with the news that gay marriage is legal now in California! Cam and Mitch are so excited and can’t believe it. Gloria asks Cam how the proposal process works with two men. Cam is unsure, so she encourages Cam to propose today because everyone deserves a good proposal story (even though hers wasn’t that great, Jay told Manny to “bring me that thing” and gave Gloria the ring—so not acceptable in my book).

Manny is headed to visit Gloria’s family in Columbia (if Gloria doesn’t have a meltdown first). He can’t find his birth certificate so he and Jay went to get a copy. Jay wants to get that kid on a plane stat or all of Gloria’s family will be coming to visit them. That’s a lot of folks!

Claire is feeling the pressure of the kids being home for the summer and she is only four days in. Calgon take me away! She decided to rearrange the family calendar so they could have more kid free time and Phil (who always brings the funny lines) said “Sometimes I don’t know if I love how much I fear Claire or fear how much I love Claire.” Aw! Sweet, hilarious, and totally understandable. Claire works her “witchcraft” and it looks like they might have seven kid-free days this summer. Score!

Claire rescues Mitch at a coffee shop (who forgot his wallet) and encourages Mitch to propose to Cam that night. Cam’s biggest complaint is that Mitch isn’t romantic enough, so Claire told him to be romantic. With Gloria in Cam’s corner and Claire in Mitch’s corner (although Claire has some strange suggestions) who will get to propose first Cam or Mitch? This will be interesting (but my vote is for Mitch).

Phil tries to convince Alex to switch her Habitat for Humanity trip, and Luke to change his camp week so they would be gone at the same time as Haley’s vacation (part of the master 7 kid-free days plan). Luke (who has grown up a bit over the summer) doesn’t want to change because of a girl he likes. The jury is still out on Alex; Phil turned on the fake waterworks and said he’s “never been that far away from his baby girl.” Nice one Phil.

Cam and Mitchell are riding in the car and they both think they are getting away with a huge surprise. Cam said “He is going to be as blindsided as the fattest hog on founder’s day.” Hilarious! Cam wants to propose at the restaurant they had their first date and Mitch wants to propose in two rocking chairs with a romantic setting because Cam said he always wanted someone to grow old with. Aw!

As soon as they got to the restaurant Mitch figured out that Cam was going to propose and pretended to be sick. He didn’t want Cam to ruin his one chance to be romantic. Well Cam had a backup plan. He had Jay and Gloria recreate the picnic they had when they moved in their first apartment (I have to say, they have some great proposal ideas). Claire and Phil show up at Cam and Mitchell’s place and find Gloria and Jay there. They figure out that Cam and Mitch are both trying to propose to each other and Jay said, “We never had these problems before they let men marry men.” Yikes! Gloria gets frustrated and tells him he doesn’t care about this stuff and brings up his lame proposal. He tells her that he had something big planned at a fancy restaurant but Manny jumped the gun. When he said “Manny hand me that thing, he was referring to the remote.” Too funny! Gloria loved her new proposal story and hugged Jay and said “Yes I’ll marry you!”Mitch and Cam Proposal

Phil and Claire set up the rocking chairs and they reminisced about Phil’s proposal. Claire starts to feel guilty because she mentioned to Phil’s Dad that he might have some free time during their kid-free week (she wanted some mama time to herself). After hearing Phil declare his love for her she admitted that she told his Dad about the free time and that she is a “cold hearted bloodless wifebot!” Ha! She is hilarious. Then she gets a text from her mother wanting her to visit and realizes Phil did the same thing! He wanted alone time too.

Cam and Mitch got a flat tire on the way home and they changed it together. There was a beautiful view of the city and they got distracted; the tire rolled down the hill. Whoops! They laughed it off and both got on one knee to fix the tire. Then they both looked into each other’s eyes and they knew. They both just said “yes” at the same time and it was so sweet! They know how to make a special moment out of any scenario. Congrats to Mitch and Cam! They are engaged! Yay!

Episode 2-First Days

After 20 years Claire is starting a job at Jay’s closet company. Due to budget cuts, Cam’s job as a middle school music teacher has been eliminated so he has been working as a high school sub. He is just like Batman except instead of a bat symbol, he gets a phone call!

Luke and Manny are both starting high school! I can’t believe it. Manny claims to be a changed man after his summer in Columbia. He’s an international jetsetter now so watch out ladies!
Claire shows up to her first day at work with a plate of cookies, Jay told her that was a big mistake and made her look desperate. She wants people to like her but Jay said she should want them to respect her and wants her to be tough. Claire is determined to prove to her father that she can be nice, liked and still an efficient manager, so she completely ignored his advice. She tried to be cool and talk to the employees in the break room, but they all just looked at her funny. They knew she was “Pritchett’s Daughter” and that was all they cared about, except for the creepy IT guy; he was nice to her.

Mitch took Lily to her first day of 1st grade while Cam went to sub at High school. He got excited when he learned his position could become permanent if he did a good job, because the teacher he was filling in for went to rehab. The only problem was he was teaching AP History which is not a good look for Cam.
Luke Phil AlexPhil bumped into Gloria at the High School and they went to get coffee together. When they got to the coffee shop it was closed because there was a commercial being shot there. The director asked if they would like to be extras and Gloria said, “Yes!” Phil saw some old people and wanted to make sure it wasn’t a catheter commercial. Ha! He was on board otherwise.

Cam wanted to add a little drama to AP History so he showed up to class dressed as George Washington. Alex took one look at him and said “Oh Boy!” Cam struggles with the material so by the end of class Alex is teaching at the board. He thanked her and promised to be more prepared tomorrow and he might be her permanent teacher. She does not want him to be her teacher because she needs someone who will help her ace her AP final and Cam doesn’t seem to be the one to do it. She told him that she has worked too hard for him to mess it up for her. Snap!

Mitch has a meeting with his boss and brought Lily with him (she had a little incident with a pillar at school but she is fine). He told her to pretend she was his assistant until Haley came to pick her up. Mitch’s boss was a being a total dbag until Haley got there and he suddenly became interested in her (even though he is at least twice her age). He blew off Mitch completely and wanted Haley’s fashion input. Just then the phone rang and Lily answered “Daddy’s office!” Then she said “You sound like a little girl” and hung up. She is too cute!

On the commercial set, Gloria had some difficulty being an extra. She didn’t understand that she wasn’t supposed to talk, or answer an imaginary phone and pass it to Phil, or put on fake lipstick. During a break they talked about how Manny and Luke didn’t want to hug them goodbye at school. They realize they have to let them grow up and Phil lost it all through the next take while Gloria attempted to feed him fake food. Definitely amusing!

Mitch’s boss takes the flirting a little too far when he asks Haley to go to Cabo with him. Mitch had enough. He told him she was not going with him and he needed to grow up and act his age. His midlife crisis was hurting the company and Mitch was tired of it. Oh snap!

Cam took Alex’s advice and told the principal that he couldn’t be the history teacher. He gave the principal some football coaching advice and now he is the new Gym teacher and football coach! Now that is awesome.

Claire went to lunch with the creepy IT guy (against her father’s advice to stay away from him because he was going to fire him). He told Claire that he was going to buy a house and Claire tried to talk him out of it since she knew he was going to lose his job. Then he tried to pick up the tab, but she wouldn’t let him. She ended up spilling the beans to the IT guy which gave him time to make a plan. This plan consisted of messing up the whole system where no one could log on or access files. Oops, Claire found a way to mess up her first day and realized listening to Jay’s advice might be beneficial after all.

So what did you think of Modern Family’s two for one special? Did you like Cam and Mitch’s proposal? Do you think Claire will be able to handle a job as well as the family? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.
