MODERN FAMILY: Mistery Date Recap

By  |

This episode was full of character pairings that worked well together. I really enjoyed Phil and Dave (guest star Matthew Broderick), and Luke and Manny. The writer’s always come up with clever episode titles, but this one is one of my favorites. So let’s dig in to the Mistery Date.

Phil has the house all to himself this weekend and he plans to rig everything in the house to his Ipad. Claire encourages him to visit friends and play outside, but he seems pretty happy about staying in. To him it is the year 2025 and he is the first one there.

MODERN FAMILY - "Mistery Date"Alex is competing in the Academic challenge so Claire took Manny and Luke along for the trip. While checking into the hotel Manny sees the girl of his dreams walk by. He knows this because she smiled at him and no girl has ever smiled at him like that before. She is at the hotel for a Bar Mitzvah and he is determined to crash the party and find her. The only problem is there were three Bar Mitzvah’s at the hotel.  Manny convinced Luke to help him crash the parties, since he is better at scheming (I swear these two need their own spin-off show, they really crack me up). After awhile they find Manny’s girl. They ended up taking pictures together in the photo booth even though it was obvious she wasn’t as into him as he was into her.

During the Academic Challenge, Claire was too busy talking about how Alex won last year and the importance of seat cushions to other parents, to actually support Alex. Alex missed a question early on and Claire didn’t even notice and yelled Woo Hoo! Alex was embarrassed that she “Wooed” her. Claire tried to comfort her backstage by saying “You know I’m in awe of you, right?” She is proud of her daughter, and definitely likes to brag about her.

Phil goes to the gym and meets Dave (who happens to be a gay friend of Cam’s) and Phil has no idea he is gay. I mean no idea at all. Phil invited Dave over for a boy’s night and had no idea what he was getting himself into. Dave just got out of a relationship and thinks it is a date, and Phil thinks he is taking Claire’s advice and having fun with a friend. Dave calls Cam for advice about his new date and Cam is full of suggestions and encourages Dave to go on the date.

Dave shows up to Phil’s house with spinach dip and we have a plot of two scenarios going on at the same time. Hilarious! It started with Phil saying, “We have the house to ourselves. They’re all out of town. I’m long overdue for a boys’ night.” Everything Phil says from this point on can be mistaken as a come on and it was hilarious! They end up shirtless after spilling Margaritas on each other, and hug after their football team scored. This date is moving too fast for Dave so he rushes out after giving Phil a little kiss on the lips. Phil is totally confused and heads upstairs.

Cam wants to give Gloria and Jay a mural for the new baby’s nursery. Mitchell goes along with it even though he would prefer to give them something off of their registry. Cam just has to distract Gloria for 4 hours while a painter comes over to do the mural. Piece of Cake! Gloria is tired and wants to lie down. Cam takes her to lunch and does his best to keep her busy despite the fact she keeps trying to take a nap.

Mitch takes Jay to shop for the baby and he notices Jay acting strange. They bump into a doctor that Jay was hesitant to introduce to Mitch and he saw Jay hugging someone wearing a bunny costume (after he pointed out that people in those suits probably spread conjunctivitis). Awkward behavior indeed. Mitch is hesitant to ask Jay what is wrong because in the past he made MODERN FAMILY - "Mistery Date"comments like “What are we girlfriends?” Mitch finally gets it out of Jay, and he is sad because he has to give up his home office. Mitch said once the baby comes, everything will all be alright.

Gloria couldn’t stand Cam’s stories anymore and went upstairs just as the heavenly mural of Gloria, Jay and Manny was done. She loved it and Jay liked it. It made it easier for him to give up his office.

Luke and Manny goof off in the photo booth after a long evening and these two are definitely ones to keep your eyes on. The more their friendship grows, the funnier they become.
