My Top Choices for August TV

By  |

We are now in the middle of summer and there are a lot of TV options both on linear TV and all of the streaming services to watch throughout August, but my list this time around is significantly shorter than usual.

The full August TV calendar (primarily for dramas and movies) will be up in a few days, by the way.

Let’s start with the season premieres, which include the following:

* Lioness on Paramount+ back for a third season starting on August 2
* The Librarians: The Next Chapter back for season two on TNT at 9 PM starting on August 2
* My Life with the Walter Boys back for a third season on Netflix starting on August 6
* Reacher on Amazon Prime for the first three episodes of season four on August 12

SEASON FINALE

There is only one season finale that I am interested in watching, and that would be Patience on PBS at 8 PM on August 2.

MOVIES, MOVIES, MOVIES

While there are, yet again, a lot of made for TV movies or feature films that will be airing during the month of August, the following are my top two choices:

The box office movie You, Me & Tuscany will make its small screen review on Peacock on August 7 and features Little Mermaid star Halle Bailey and Bridgerton hunk Rege-Jean Page.

Don’t Say Good Luck will debut on Netflix on August 14, starring Adam Sandler’s daughter Sunny Sandler in the lead role of a theater kid preparing for her leading role in her high school musical of Waitress when suddenly family drama overtakes the drama on stage. Some of the other cast members will include Melanie Lynskey, Max Greenfield, Steve Buscemi, Bebe Neuwirth and Stephanie Beatriz.

BRAND NEW DRAMAS

Out of all of the new dramas that will be debuting throughout August, these are my top shows:

* Sterling Point, which comes from actress Megan Park as well as the uber-producing team of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, will debut on Amazon Prime on August 5. The series will be a heartfelt, coming-of-age drama focusing on 17-year-old Annie Jacobson, who was raised in New York City with her twin brother and loving adoptive father. But Annie’s life takes a turn when she inherits her mysterious grandfather’s island in Canada where she finds new friends, budding romances and untold family secrets. For the adults who will be watching we can see Jeffery Dean Morgan, Jay Duplass and Missi Pyle.

* Anna Pigeon will debut on the USA Network on August 7, starring Tracy Spiradakos as a former city slicker who becomes a park ranger after a devastating loss. Battlestar Galactica beauty Tricia Helfer will play Anna’s sister.

* My Brilliant Career is a period piece drama set to debut on Netflix on August 13. The series focuses on modern and rebellious Sybylla, who dreams only of writing. She chooses an exciting career over a safe marriage, that is until she falls in love unexpectedly. Veteran actress Anna Chancellor will play Sybylla’s grandmother.

* Lanterns, which is part of James Gunn’s DC Universe, will debut on HBO at 9 PM on August 16 (viewers will also be able to watch this new series on HBO Max). Starring Aaron Pierre as new recruit John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops who are drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Once our August TV calendar goes live, and you’ve had a chance to look it over, please let us know what you are looking forward to watching.
