Throwback Tuesday: International Women’s Day

By  |

March 8 is International Women’s Day (IWD), the global day to celebrate women.

This year the theme of International Women’s Day is #ChooseToChallenge. You can learn more about this year’s theme and the IWD movement here.

Put your hand up high to show you’re in for 2021.

Also, as a way to look back and honor March 8, please check out the following article I wrote about International Women’s Day back in 2019:

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.

According to their official website, IWD is powered by the collective efforts of all. Collective action and shared ownership for driving gender parity is what makes International Women’s Day successful.

The 2019 IWD campaign is themed Balance for Better. The thought process behind the theme is: The future is exciting. Let’s build a gender-balanced world. Everyone has a part to play – all the time, everywhere. From grassroots activism to worldwide action, we are entering an exciting period of history where the world expects balance. We notice its absence and celebrate its presence. Balance drives a better working world. Let’s all help create a #BalanceforBetter.

The Balance for Better campaign will run all year, not just on IWD (March 8). The campaign theme provides a unified direction to guide and galvanize continuous collective action, with #BalanceforBetter activity reinforced and amplified all year.

Balance is not a women’s issue, it’s a business issue. The race is on for the gender-balanced boardroom, a gender-balanced government, gender-balanced media coverage, a gender-balance of employees, more gender-balance in wealth, gender-balanced sports coverage. Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive.
