Preview: The Family Film Dolphin Island
The new family movie Dolphin Island, from Entertainment Squad and created by Mr. Puppy Presents, will be released on March 2.
Set in The Bahamas, the movie centers on 14-year-old Annabel Coleridge (newcomer Tyler Jade Nixon), who lives on the beautiful island with her fisherman grandfather Jonah (Peter Woodward from the box office movie The Patriot). She is surrounded by an extended family of loving, albeit quirky, neighbors and her best friend – a dolphin named Mitzy.
Everything changes when her maternal grandparents – Samuel and Sheryl Williams (David Raizor and Annette Lovrien Duncan) arrive with a shifty lawyer named Robert Carbunkle (Bob Bledsoe) to bring her back to New York.
It’s up to Annabel and her friends – including new friend Mateo Rolle (newcomer Aaron Borrow) and his mother Desaray Rolle (Dionne Lea) – to figure out how to save the day and prove that love conquers all.
Dolphin Island is a heartwarming story that mixes drama with the power of family and community. There are obvious similarities to the original Flipper movies from the mid-60’s as well as the late 1990’s TV series (which starred a then relatively unknown actress named Jessica Alba). Of course, there is also the dramatic trope of separating a child from a parent – or in this case a grandparent – because of long-standing family issues.
Dolphin Island won Best Feature Film at the 2021 Christian Film Festival; and without spoiling the movie for those who want to watch it starting next week, the film is a feel-good movie that can be shared among the family, as it teaches acceptance, forgiveness and the love shared within a family.
