What I’m Looking Forward to for September TV

Normally, as we all know, September would be the start of the new fall TV season with all the returning dramas coming back for a new season as well as all the new drams debuting. But like everything else in 2020, that simply isn’t happening. Bummber!

That being said, though, I do have to give credit to the networks and the streaming services for doing their best to provide new programming to those of us who are going through quite a bit of TV withdrawal.

Among the dramas and made-for-TV movies that will air during September, the following are my top choices for September:

NEW DRAMAS

The hit Canadian medical drama Transplant will debut on NBC on September 1 at 10 PM.

The series centers on Dr. Bashir “Bash” Hamed (Hamza Haq from Quantico), a Syrian doctor with battle-tested skills in emergency medicine who fled his country with his younger sister, Amira. Together they struggle to build a new life in Canada as Bash strives to rebuild his career in medicine. The cast includes John Hannah (The Mummy franchise) and Torri Higginson (Stargate: Atlantis).

The new Netflix drama Away will debut online on September 4.

Hilary Swank stars as Emma Green, the commander of an international crew on a treacherous mission to Mars. The cast also includes Josh Charles (The Good Wife) and Ato Essandoh (Chicago Med and the box office movie Jason Bourne).

The new drama Departure will debut on September 17 on Peacock.

Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) stars as investigator Kendra Malley, who alongside her mentor Howard Lawson (veteran actor Christopher Plummer) are brought in to investigate the disappearance of passenger Flight 716. The cast includes Kris Holden-Reid (Lost Girl and The Umbrella Academy), Rebecca Liddiard (Franke Drake Mysteries), Peter Mensah (Midnight, Texas) and Sasha Roiz (Grimm and Suits).

The Spectrum Originals drama L.A.’s Finest [that could only be seen by those who have Spectrum as their cable provider] will make its network debut on FOX on September 21 at 8 PM.

The show follows Syd Burnett (Gabrielle Union from Being Mary Jane), last seen in Miami taking down a drug cartel, who has seemingly left her complicated past behind to become an LAPD detective. Paired with a new partner, Nancy McKenna (Jessica Alba from Dark Angel), a working mom with an equally complex history, Syd is forced to confront how her unapologetic lifestyle may be masking a greater personal secret. Among its cast are Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights), Ryan McPartlin (Chuck) and veteran actor Ernie Hudson.

FINALES

The Australian drama The Code will air its season finale on Ovation on September 5 at 7 PM while the season finale of first season of the Canadian import Coroner will air on The CW on September 23 at 9 PM.

MADE-FOR-TV MOVIES

There are an even dozen movies set to debut throughout September. Out of those I am most interested in seeing:

Same Time Next Week on UPtv on September 13 at 7 PM, starring Firefly alum Jewel Staite, Travis Milne (Rookie Blue) and Chris McNally (When Calls the Heart).

Love at Daisy Hills on the Hallmark Channel is expected to air on September 19 at 9 PM, starring Cindy Busby (the popular Hallmark Channel movies Unleashing Mr. Darcy and Marrying Mr. Darcy) and Marshall Williams (When Hope Calls).

Secret Society of Second-Born Royals on Disney+ on September 25, starring a group of relative newcomers, including Niles Fitch (This Is Us), Skylar Astin (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist) and Greg Bryk (Bitten and Code 8).

Love at Look Lodge is expected to air on the Hallmark Channel on September 26 at 9 PM, starring Clark Backo (Supernatural and Designated Survivor) and Jonathan Keltz (Reign).
