Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Roundtable: Zoey’s Extraordinary Silence
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is still making us laugh and cry each week. Roz and Leah (and occasionally Mel, Karen and Ange) will be covering the show each week to discuss the things that were Music To Our Ears and the things that were more Nails On A Chalkboard. Join us won’t you? (Leah’s life is a little busy right now so it might just be Roz sharing her thoughts.)
“Zoey’s Extraordinary Silence” – Zoey tries to help Mitch’s caregiver, Howie, reconnect with his estranged daughter. Max must make a decision about his future at SPRQ Point.
Music To Our Ears
Roz: “Sounds of Silence” is one of my favorite songs, and I love how much that moment reached both Howie, and Mitch, as they deal with trying to silently support their families while still feeling awkward.
I also appreciate how much we’re getting to see more of Emily and David as they get closer and closer to the baby coming. Emily’s song was a powerful reminder of what can be a silent conversation during pregnancies (I think. I’ll admit I’ve never been pregnant.)
Ange: I’m with you Roz on appreciating seeing more of Emily and David, especially with the development of Emily’s character in previous weeks. I also like seeing Zoey and Mo’s friendship, so their scenes together – especially when it involves Mo sassing Zoey, are a joy to watch. The little nugget of Tobin knowing ASL was great too and classic Tobin that he learnt it to impress a girl who was not interested!
Karen: “Sounds of Silence” was a wonderfully understated performance. I like Howie as an addition to the cast, and him having a number this week was a particular joy.
Nails On The Chalkboard
Roz: It’s so small but it’s hard to see Howie be so narrow-minded about what to do with his daughter. Even without hearing, she can and should make her own choices.
Ange: I wasn’t a fan of Howie’s treatment of his daughter either, but I was happy to see him come around by the end of the episode.
Karen: I continue to have issues with Zoey’s infatuation with Simon, and his ambiguity with her. Cheating in any form really bugs me. When I find a book that includes cheating, it’s usually an immediate DNF. That being said, this element of the show is troublesome.
Music
Roz: “Fight Song” was an amazing performance! Bravo to everyone involved in that number and for making the show more inclusive of those that are deaf or hard of hearing.
I also loved “Happier” even though I know it signals something more coming for Zoey and Simon.
Ange: The “Fight Song” number was fantastic! Definitely a standout performance of the season! As a longtime Kelly Clarkson fan, it was a nice surprise when Mo started singing “The Trouble With Love Is” as well. (Yes, I may have squeed when I realised what the song was.)
Karen: Emily’s little interlude was good, and I like her very much. Never thought I’d be a fan of a Pussycat Dolls song. Great voice too. I’m happily surprised by the performances each week.
