When Calls the Heart Recap: “Family Matters”
Sunday night’s episode of When Calls the Heart focused on the following:
Lucas gives his thoughts on Elizabeth’s writing; Nathan investigates his father’s crime; Jesse and Clara plan for their wedding; Faith must make a decision about medical school.
Faith and Carson
As we saw in last week’s episode, Carson was trying to convince Faith to consider becoming a doctor, and that she could hopefully mentor with him. She decided to move forward with that, and received a call from a doctor in Hamilton, who told her that she only needs two more credits in order to begin her mentorship. But unfortunately, the classes she needs to take don’t have any more spaces available, and that she’d have to wait one year to take the classes. That is until Faith receives another call from the doctor, who tells her that she could take the classes in Chicago. It’s a hard decision to make, but she decides that she’ll leave next week for Chicago with Carson’s blessings.
Jesse and Clara
Their wedding preparations were coming together well with Jesse asking Kevin, the town’s blacksmith, and his co-worker Hickam to be his groomsmen, which spurred Clara to ask Fiona as well as Elizabeth to be her bridesmaids. They also got their food and flowers all arranged, but still needed a pastor. Also Bill started to feel a little left out because the couple hadn’t asked him to help with the wedding. That was because Clara had a big question to ask him. She wanted him to walk her down the aisle because he is the “closest thing” she “has to a father.”
The Grant Family
Young Allie is still pretty upset with her Uncle Nathan for not letting her see or talk to her grandfather, and just as upset that Nathan arrested him. As we learned at the end of last week’s episode, Archie is suspected of stealing an expensive necklace. Nathan wasn’t getting anywhere in questioning his own dad so he asked Bill to questioning him, warning him that Archie is a good liar.
After Bill spoke with Archie, he knew that Archie wasn’t telling him the complete truth. Archie did share that he got money from an old friend, who turned out to be a former cellmate of his: Donnie Edmonds (who also goes by the name of Harvey Butler).
Nathan decides to head to Benson Hills to do some investigation of his own, quickly learning that Edmonds aka Butler had been in the area when the necklace went missing; but he recently left using a buckboard, which he could easily track.
Nathan caught up with Edmonds, and quickly discovered that he did indeed have the necklace, meaning his father was actually innocent of that crime. Once back in Hope Valley, Nathan released his father, and allowed Allie to talk to him before he left town, as he had a job offer from a friend “up North.” Archie gave Allie some written stories about her mother, who passed away when Allie was only 4 years old, and he promised his granddaughter that he would continue to send her more stories about her mother, making Allie very happy.
Elizabeth’s Book
Elizabeth has been feverishly working on several chapters of her book, so much so that Rosemary has even heard her typing away. When asked how the book was coming along by Lucas, Elizabeth said she had finished a few chapters, and he, of course, requested if he could read them.
Later in the episode, Elizabeth caught Lucas laughing over her chapters, and he shared that he found her character Luther Brandt very interesting (the character owned the local hotel, loved books and loved to travel – just like Lucas). But Elizabeth warned him to keep reading, and once he did he learned that Luthor was also like Nathan because he was a widower and a former Pinkerton. Needless to say, she based that character on both of them.
