Musician Spotlight: The 1990s Queen of Ska Punk

Over the course of the last year or so, I have highlighted female musicians from different generations and different music styles; most of them have been personal favorites of mine.

This time around, I’m going to focus on a style of music that isn’t necessarily a favorite of mine but is popular nonetheless and more specifically was extremely popular during the mid-1990s. That style of music is Ska Punk.

Ska Punk is a fusion genre that mixes ska and punk rock music, featuring brass instruments, especially horns like trumpets and trombones as well as woodwind instruments like saxophones. Before this style of music began, ska bands and punk rock bands performed on the same bill.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s bands – such as The Clash for example – fused characteristics of punk rock and ska, but during the late 1980s and early 1990s Ska Punk enjoyed its greatest success with bands like Sublime and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

In the mid-to-late 1990s, the best-selling Ska Punk record was Tragic Kingdom by the band No Doubt whose lead singer is California-born Gwen Stefani. Given the band’s international appeal during that time Stefani easily became the 1990s Queen of Ska Punk. And while the band’s time focusing on that brand of music was more or less short-lived before they started delving into other musical sounds and eventually went more mainstream with their music, No Doubt put Ska Punk on the radar of mainstream music fans during those years.

NOTE: For those interested, special attention should be made to singers like Phyllis Dillon, Millicent “Patsy” Todd, Marcia Griffiths, Joya Landis, Norma Fraser, Cynthia Richards, Rita Anderson Marley and Dawn Penn, all of whom were top female vocalists of the era in Ska music.

By the early 2000s, though, many of the bands in Ska Punk had broken up and this genre of music lost mainstream appeal, but No Doubt remained a band from 1986 through 2004. It was near the end of 2004 when Stefani released her first solo album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby., which spawned hits like “What You Waiting For?” and “Hollaback Girl.”

Her second solo album The Sweet Escape was released in 2006 with the title track reaching the top 10 in over 15 nations, including hitting number two in the United States, Australia and the UK.

She spent the next 10 years touring, recording with No Doubt [among others] and appearing on television on The Voice. Shortly prior to that time, she even tried her hand at acting. Her third solo album This Is What the Truth Feels Like was released in 2016. It debuted at number one on the Billboard Top 200 album chart and included the number one single “Used To Love You.”

The following year her fourth album, which was also her first full-length Christmas album entitled You Make It Feel Like Christmas, was released. And her fifth studio album Bouquet came out in 2024.

She was married to Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale from 2002 until their divorce became official in 2016. They had three sons who currently range in age from 12 years old to 20 years old. In 2021, she married fellow The Voice judge and country music legend Blake Shelton.

In addition to being a singer and songwriter, Stefani made most of the clothing she wore on stage with No Doubt, which later led her to become a fashion designer in her own right, launching her haute couture clothing line – L.A.M.B. – in 2004. Her style was influenced by a variety of fashions, including Guatemalan, Japanese and Jamaican; and she achieved popularity with stars like Teri Hatcher and Nicole Kidman. The following year she expanded her collection line with the merchandise line Harajuku Lovers, which included a camera, mobile phone charms and undergarments. In 2006, she also released a limited-edition line of fashion dolls. Ten years ago, after needing to wear glasses, Stefani began releasing eyewear through L.A.M.B. and also began releasing affordable eyewear under the label GX, with Tura Inc.

Stefani has won an American Music Award, two Billboard Music Awards, a Brit Award, three Grammy Awards and a World Music Award. She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023. She is also ranked as the 54th most successful artist and 37th most successful Hot 100 Artist of the 2000 to 2009 decade and VH1 ranked her 13th on their 100 Greatest Women in Music list in 2014.
