Do You Remember Midnight, Texas

The NBC supernatural drama Midnight, Texas, based on the book series by Charlaine Harris (the author behind the books for which the series True Blood was based), debuted on July 24, 2017.

The series focused on young psychic Manfred Bernardo (Francois Arnaud who appeared in Blindspot and later starred in The Moodys), on the run from his past, is told by the ghost of his grandmother Xylda (a psychic herself) to seek out refuge in Midnight, Texas.

There, he found a community that could help him. The town was full of diverse characters, including a vampire, a witch, a fallen angel, a half-demon and a werecreature. The small town faced numerous threats from the outside world as it welcomed the newcomer.

The main cast included:

Peter Mensah (Sleepy Hollow and Departure) played Lemuel “Lem” Bridger, a vampire with a dark past who first came to Midnight in the 1950s and never left;

Arielle Kebbel (The Vampire Diaries and Hallmark Channel movies) played Olivia Charity, a freelance assassin with as many secrets as guns she owns, and wife of Lemuel;

Parisa Fitz-Henley (Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance and The Sinner) played Fiji Cavanaugh, a quirky free-spirited witch who owns Midnight’s magic shop and struggles to come to terms with how powerful she really is;

Dylan Bruce (Orphan Black) who played Bobo Winthrop, the human proprietor of Midnight Pawn, landlord to Lemuel, Olivia, and Manfred. She was first the best friend of Fiji, and later became her boyfriend; and,

Jason Lewis (Sex and the City) who played Joe Strong, a fallen angel who has prophesied darkness heading towards Midnight.

In season 1, the following were series regulars:

Sarah Ramos (American Dreams and Parenthood) played Creek Lovell, the mortal “girl next door beauty” waitress and gas-station attendant who became the love interest of Manfred; and,

Yul Vazquez (Russian Doll and The Outsider) played Reverend Emilio Sheehan, a quiet weretiger who presided over the Wedding Chapel and Pet Cemetery and their Midnighter patrons.

Among the recurring cast were:

Kellee Stewart (My Boys and The Soul Man) played Madonna Reed, a fierce protector of her fellow Midnighters, and waitress and bartender at Midnight’s Home Cookin’ diner, who was actually Simone Davis, who was in Midnight to spy on Olivia;

Bernardo Saracino (The Space Between Us and Sicario) played Chuy Strong, a half-demon who, along with his husband, Joe, fears others will find out what they are;

Nestor Carbonell (Lost) played Kai Lucero, one of the owners of Midnight’s new hotel;

Jaime Ray Newman (Drop Dead Diva and The Magicians) played Patience Lucero, one of the owners of Midnight’s new hotel, and Kai’s wife; and,

Josh Kelly (unREAL and Bluff City Law) played Walker Chisum, an openly gay demon hunter who has an intense connection with resident angel Joe Strong.

Among the guest stars in the show were:

Jasmine Cephas Jones, who was part of the original Broadway cast of Hamilton and later went on to star in the small screen adaptation of Blindspotting;

Jaime Murray, who TV viewers will remember from roles in Once Upon a Time, Defiance and Warehouse 13; and,

Zahn McClarnon, who has appeared in Longmire and Westworld.

Midnight, Texas only lasted for two seasons with the first season consisting of 10 episodes and the second season consisting of 9 episodes. The series was cancelled on December 21, 2018 just a week after its season two finale episode aired. From the beginning the series suffered from low ratings, earning an average of 3 million viewers during its debut season and falling to an average of 2.1 million viewers for its second and final season.

The series was developed for the small screen and executive produced by Monica Owusu-Breen (who has worked on shows like Alias, Brothers & Sisters and Lost).
