“9-1-1, what’s your emergency?”

Now that Ryan Murphy’s hit 9-1-1 franchise airs back-to-back on Monday nights this season, join us each week as we dive into the wild situations that the first responders of Firehouse 118 and Firehouse 126 find themselves in. FYI there are spoilers, so if you haven’t seen last night’s episodes,  9-1-1: “Alone Together” and 9-1-1: Lone Stars “2100°” yet, you’re reading at your own risk!

THE MUDSLIDE

9-1-1: L-R: Peter Krause and Ryan Guzman in the “Alone Together” episode of 9-1-1 airing Monday, Jan. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: FOX. © 2021 FOX Media LLC.

Last week on 9-1-1 we saw the Hollywood Reservoir burst, causing chaos all over the city. The after effects continue this week with all that water causing a mudslide. Three friends are hiking so that they can get a selfie with the Hollywood sign, when the earth begins to shake and the famous sign starts to tumble! Two of the friends are able to hold onto the ‘H’ of the sign, but one is stuck sinking into the mud. It’s up to Bobby, Eddie and Hen to save him. Moments before the mudslide, the guy that got caught in the mud was storming off, seemingly frustrated at the female friend. There’s nothing like a near-death experience to reveal true feelings – as the team work on rescuing him, he reveals he’s actually in love with the female, much to the displeasure of his friend who is dating her. Cue awkwardness here. The guy survives the mud, but now he’ll have to face the wrath of his friend.

ATHENA AND THE AGORAPHOBIC WOMAN

9-1-1: L-R: Guest star Lilli Birdsell and Angela Bassett in the “Alone Together” episode of 9-1-1 airing Monday, Jan. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: FOX. © 2021 FOX Media LLC.

In the closing moments of last week’s episode we saw Athena get trapped inside a Hollywood Hills house as it started to crumble. She’s okay and so is Sylvia, the agoraphobic woman, but they’ll need to get out of that house pronto. Athena manages to reach dispatch on her radio to call for help, but the house shifting in the slide doesn’t exactly make their location accurate. Athena’s daughter, May, is shadowing at the call center and is there when Athena’s call comes through. She’s also there when the house shifts while Athena is on the line. Yikes! The latest shift has Sylvia trapped and urging Athena to leave her. She refuses and eventually manages to free Sylvia. The two women continue to try and find their way out of the house. They succeed and it’s nightfall when they reach outside. Athena’s husband, Bobby, is up in a helicopter searching for his wife. He almost misses her but a quick thinking Athena is able to draw attention by activating her squad car and she and Sylvia are rescued.

THE LOST BABY

While Bobby, Hen and Eddie are helping the hikers, Buck and Chimney are searching for survivors in the mudslide. Chimney hears a baby cry. He and Buck come across a baby monitor and have to figure out where the cries are coming from. They eventually track it to a house in the area. The house has been buried in the mudslide and the only way to get in is down the chimney. So Chimney goes down the chimney, ha! As he searches the house, he finds a woman that he presumes to be the mother, dead. He finds the baby, who is miraculously unharmed in its crib. Then he hears more noises in the house and breaks down the door to find the baby’s actual mother, along with three other women! It turns out the deceased woman was running an illegal adoption ring and had locked the women up. What’s more, one of the women is in labour. Oh boy! At this point, Eddie and Hen are on the scene to assist Buck and Chimney. Chimney coaches the woman through labour and it helps him come to realisations about his own situation with Maddie and their pregnancy. He moves back home at the end of the episode.

THE HELLMOUTH MINI GOLF INCIDENT

9-1-1: LONE STAR: L-R: Julian Works, Natacha Karam and Rob Lowe in the “2100°” episode of 9-1-1: LONE STAR airing Monday, Jan. 25 (9:01-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. © 2021 Fox Media LLC. CR: Kevin Estrada/FOX.

Remember all that lava we saw at the end of last week’s 9-1-1: Lone Star? Well it’s causing a lot of chaos in Austin this week! A family is having a fun day out at the local mini golf course, when they hear some sizzling before the ground begins to fall apart underneath them. Next thing you know, the father falls into the steaming hole that is now in the ground as his wife and son watch on horrified. When the 126 arrive at the scene, it’s like a steaming trench, or as Marjan refers to it – Hellmouth. It’s Marjan who repels down into the hole to rescue the man. It’s not pretty though, as a result of the heat, the man is sticking to the steaming hot ground and Marjan has to yank him from it before they both melt. Ouch!

THE FOODTRUCK

Remember the lady in her food truck who was too busy meditating and massing kale to realize she was in the path of lava at the end of last week’s episode? We return back to her this week and her situation has escalated even more! She is crouching on the counter inside her food truck because it has been invaded by scorpions! Scorpions that she is not going to want to get bitten by either. The scorpions have assembled because of the heat of the lava – something that the woman, Lily, has not realised yet. Her call is being taken by Grace, who calmly alerts her to the lava and also a way to get rid of the scorpions. There are worse places to be trapped with hordes of scorpions than a food truck, cos at least the food truck has vinegar that she can use to spray the scorpions cos they don’t like the acidity. That’s one problem solved but the lava is getting closer. Just when we think Lily is going to be a goner, Officer Reyes shows up to get her out of the truck. Phew! Moments later we see it start to sink into the lava, so talk about close call!

THE FRAT PARTY

9-1-1: LONE STAR: Guest star Mark Elias in the “2100°” episode of 9-1-1: LONE STAR airing Monday, Jan. 25 (9:01-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. © 2021 Fox Media LLC. CR: Kevin Estrada/FOX.

This week’s episode opens with a frat party – there’s a pool, a spa and plenty of douche college kids. After chilling in the spa, one of said douche kids leans back into the pool, not realising everyone else has vacated the pool when they spotted lava. Too late, he gets into the lava invested pool. A classmate tries to give him her hand to pull him out but as she pulls, she’s horrified when all that she’s holding is skin! Eeek! The episode then goes back to eight hours earlier and when we later return to the scene, the 126 are there. The girl has burns but will be okay. One of douche guy’s friends turns out to be not so douchey and is concerned about her. He’s not hurt – that is until he watches her be loaded into the ambulance and a stray lavaball hits him in the chest! Nancy and Tommy have to act fast to make sure it doesn’t melt his heart. The clamps they try to use are melting because of the extreme heat. Nancy is able to pull it off using a tube and saves the guy’s life. Elsewhere on the scene, their fellow paramedic Tim is tending to a college kid who can’t feel his legs. He tries to keep the kids calm. Captain Strand passes him and Tim grabs him to assist putting the kid on a backboard. As they prepare to move the kid, in a freak accident, a massive piece of hot lava comes flying and hits Tim as a horrified Owen looks on. The scene cuts to the firehouse where we discover that Tim did not make it. It is revealed that after the lava hit him, there wasn’t enough of Tim to work on and try to save him. A truly awful accident that has everyone at the 126 shaken.

THE WILDFIRE

In the final scene of this week’s episode, we see a teen in the woods attempting to light a fire while camping. He isn’t having much luck. Suddenly animals start racing through the woods and birds are frantically flying up above. After being knocked down, the kid gets up and in the distance sees the woods on fire. Uh-oh…

Another intense week in the 9-1-1 world! I have to say that 9-1-1: Lone Star is really lifting its game this season. I thought last week’s episode was quite strong but this week’s episode is probably one of the strongest episodes of the show ever.  What did you guys think? Let us know in the comments and also vote to let us know which call was the standout!

The 9-1-1 franchise airs Monday nights on FOX with 9-1-1 at 8/7c followed by 9-1-1: Lone Star at 9/8c. Next week is the much anticipated crossover between the shows and we can’t wait!
