Nice Boy of the Week: Stephen Huszar

By  |

Our Nice Boy of the week is Stephen Huszar.

Stephen is best known for his role in the popular Ruby Herring Mysteries franchise on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, but he is no stranger to made-for-TV movies, having appeared in over a dozen films ranging from the first Aurora Teagarden Mystery, My One & Only, Return to Christmas Creek, Christmas Wedding Planner and 12 Men of Christmas, which have aired on networks like Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries and Lifetime.

This weekend – Sunday, November 15 at 7 PM to be exact – Stephen will appear in the UPtv holiday movie Mistletoe Magic alongside actress Jessica Sipos, best known for her recurring role in the Hallmark Channel series Chesapeake Shores. The synopsis for the movie is: “When self-proclaimed “Christmas Grinch” Harper (Sipos) realized that she accidentally donated her family’s beloved magic mistletoe to a charity, she enlists the help of thrift store owner and old friend Luke (Stephen) to help her retrieve it. Can Luke convince Harper that perhaps the magic of Christmas is real and that true love does exist?

Stephen was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan. He got his TV break in the 2004 made-for-TV movie The Cradle Will Fall based on the Mary Higgins Clark book of the same name. Like so many other Canadian actors, he has appeared in episodes of Supernatural and Smallville as well as episodes of Continuum, iZombie, The Flash, Fringe, Carter and Shadowhunters.

NiceGirlsTV had the opportunity to chat with Stephen about Mistletoe Magic and more in our interview below:

PLEASE TELL US WHAT THE UPtv MOVIE MISTLETOE MAGIC IS ABOUT IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

“Mistletoe Magic” is a hilarious romantic comedy about reunited friends on a hunt to find a lost mistletoe before Christmas. I shot this with the amazing Jessica Sipos.

NOTE: Our readers will recognize Jessica from the Hallmark Channel series Chesapeake Shores

WHAT DREW YOU TO PLAYING THE CHARACTER OF LUKE IN THIS MOVIE?

Luke is a good-hearted, small town guy, who is itching for more adventure in his life. He went through a bit of an awkward childhood phase, which he still holds onto at times in his adult life. I actually grew up in a small town and often feel like I’m still stuck in my awkward phase. So the role came quite naturally to me!

YOU HAVE APPEARED IN QUITE A NUMBER OF HOLIDAY MOVIES ON LIFETIME AND HALLMARK AS WELL AS THE RUBY HERRING MYSTERIES ON HALLMARK MOVIES & MYSTERIES. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT IT’S LIKE BEING A PART OF THESE MOVIES?

I enjoy making holiday movies because of the inspirational stories they tell. I feel it is important that we continue to produce positive content, especially during times like these when there is so much uncertainty and unrest in the world. I also absolutely love Christmas time and the holidays, so filming these movies are a way for me to experience them more than once a year! The Ruby Herring Mysteries Series has been a real treat to work on. I love working with my co-star, Taylor Cole, as she’s such an amazing person and talented actor! Since we have shot 3 movies of the series now, we are getting more comfortable with our characters while the audience gets to know our backstories more, keeping the show exciting and interesting for ourselves and our audience!

DO YOU HAVE A DREAM PROJECT THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO WORK ON SOMEDAY?

I enjoy working on dark comedies and thrillers, so combining these two genres in a TV or feature project would be perfect!

WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU RECEIVED AS YOU WERE BUILDING YOUR ACTING CAREER?

Never give up. Period. This industry is very challenging on many levels, and there are times when you may feel like quitting. If those moments arise, remind yourself of why you wanted to become an actor in the first place. Then get very clear on your goals and don’t let anything get in the way of achieving them. This helped me a lot. Also, surround yourself with like-minded people who support you and believe in you, as this will help elevate you and keep you on your path to success.

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL SKILL OR TALENT FOR WHICH YOUR FANS WOULD BE SURPRISED TO LEARN ABOUT?

I can walk on my hands and juggle. But not at the same time…yet.

IF YOU HADN’T BECOME AN ACTOR, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

Probably wishing I was an actor.

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE FAN INTERACTION?

I was about to go paddle-boarding one day at the beach early this summer and a little girl came up to me and said, “Hey! You’re in Ruby Herring Mysteries!” I was so surprised she recognized me – since I just came out of COVID hibernation and looked like a Neanderthal – that I just stared at her and finally said, “How do you know?” She explained how she watches the series with her family and we started talking a lot about the show. It really made me smile knowing how observant kids are, and the fact that she watches the show so diligently with her parents!

DO YOU HAVE AN ORGANIZATION OR CHARITY THAT YOU SUPPORT?

I co-founded an organization called Mindful World that produces media and curriculum to help empower families, youths and teachers with practical tools to overcome bullying, fear and anxiety.
