Good Witch Recap: “The Mandala”

By  |

Sunday night’s new episode of Good Witch focused on the aftermath of Adam’s malady from last week as well as developments in the relationship between Abigail and Donovan where the curse is concerned, Cassie wanting to get into teaching and Joy and Carter working better together at Martha’s mayoral mansion.

Let’s take a look at each of the storylines:

Adam

Sam explained to Adam that he has a small tumor that requires surgery; and Sam wanted to perform the surgery right away. It only made sense, then, that Adam’s girlfriend Stephanie was concerned, even encouraging Adam to tell his parents. He declined her suggestion, not wanting to worry his parents, and coming off as if he isn’t worried. That, obviously, was further from the truth as possible when Adam admitted to Sam that he was scared. Who wouldn’t be? But Stephanie was there by his side as Adam sought out comfort in the hospital chapel.

Cassie

Taking the dream candle message from her ancestor to heart, Cassie decided that she wanted to teach, putting her Art History degree to work (instead of Holistic Medicine for which she is renowned). But, she needed to find the right job at the right school that would take someone like her: someone who has no teaching experience whatsoever. Ironic (or not – it is Middleton after all), a customer paid a visit to Abigail’s store to purchase some chocolate for a departing member of her staff. That customer just happened to be a professor at the local college, and one of her fellow professors was leaving for a month, making it necessary for the university to fill that void.

Naturally, Abigail suggested Cassie based on the conversation the cousins had at the beginning of the episode. Soon enough an interview was held with that professor; except Cassie’s non-existent teaching experience was a concern. That lack of experience, at first, made the decision for the professor not to choose Cassie, but after all the talk at the college based on Cassie’s impromptu sand mandala “lesson” with some students in the school’s cafeteria, she eventually landed the job. As shared in the final scene between Cassie and the professor, her life experience would greatly help her temporary teaching gig (which I am going to guess will last much longer than one month, it is Middleton after all, this storyline wouldn’t have been introduced for Cassie if it wasn’t intended to last quite some time).

NOTE: A mandala is a geometric configuration of symbols, a spiritual guidance tool (if you will), that aids in meditation and provides a sacred space to help people find, among other things, peace.

Martha

That visit by Martha’s son Dylan and his wife Claire alluded to in last week’s episode was finally happening; and while Martha was delighted by their arrival – and the news of their her daughter-in-law’s pregnancy (Martha will be a “grand-mama”) – Martha and Claire quickly began to not see eye-to-eye on many issues. The funny thing: these two women are more alike than not. They are who they are: a force to be reckoned with; but they are family and despite a few rough patches in their preferences and thanks to some sage advice from Cassie, they agreed they shouldn’t be challenging each other.” NOTE: It will be interesting to see if Dylan and Claire stick around Middleton more and how well the two women work to get along.

Joy

Her work was continuing at Martha’s mayoral mansion alongside Carter – they seem to be getting along much better than last week. In fact, Joy decided to help Carter out with an issue he was having with his girlfriend Mia: she wanted him to attend a fancy dinner party, but he wasn’t interested in going. Joy got him a really nice suit, as a payback for his not taking her truck after their dart game challenge, and convinced him that he needed to go. As it turned out, Carter did go to the fancy dinner party, but he and Mia broke up as she wanted him to be someone he’s not.

NOTE: That’ll conveniently clear the path for him and Joy, as they have much more in common.

Abigail and Donovan

Abigail shared with Joy more information about the Merriwick-Davenport curse, along with Martha, as they looked at the mysterious music box. A key fell off the box when Joy took a closer look, and that was when she noticed the key fit a hole in the monogram on the box that revealed a riddle: “A breaking heart can only stop with luck, love and one teardrop.” The women quickly surmised that the luck meant the emerald, the love meant the ruby (shaped like a heart) and the teardrop had to mean the missing diamond. Joy suggested that Abigail meet with a friend of hers who is a cryptologist.

Donovan and Abigail set out to pay a visit to that cryptologist, taking a short-cut recommended by Cassie, which led to Donovan’s motorcycle breaking down on that back road. This inconvenience led them on quite an adventure, starting at an abandoned train station (that was formerly a stagecoach station), which led them to the town’s clock tower, which lead them to finding a monocle hidden behind a metal sign marked Dearport Building Co. 1819, which led them to a statue outside the clock tower.

NOTE: Dearport is an anagram of teardrop; ironic or not, Abigail and Donovan were playing an anagram game while stranded at the train station.

Using the monocle, Abigail discovered letters imprinted at the base of the statue that could be a clue to the location of the missing diamond. Thanks to advice from Sam (who loves to figure out puzzles as we learned last season), Abigail and Donovan just have to figure out what the code means, using the alphabet imprinted on the outer-edge of the monocle and possibly a matching item (that they still need to discover) that could provide a cypher code that COULD perhaps give them the final clue as to where the diamond is hidden.

Cassie and Sam

The final scene showed the impressive sand mandala that Cassie designed and created – with an assist from Joy – that provided her with peace, and even seemed to help Sam with his concerns about being able to perfectly perform the surgery on Adam, which was set for the following day.

We shall see what happens next?
