When Calls the Heart Recap: “Sweet and Sour”

By  |

Last Sunday’s episode of When Calls the Heart focused on two events happening in Hope Valley: chicken pox and a court case against Henry Gowen

As a new school day got underway, little Opal complained about being itchy during class with Elizabeth discovering multiple splotches on Opal’s arm that turned out to be chicken pox. Unfortunately, after checking with all of the students, only Allie had ever had the disease so all the kids were sent home after Carson examined Opal to confirm.

The entire town was warned about the chicken pox with Elizabeth making sure that baby Jack was kept quarantined at home. But it was quickly learned that Rosemary had never contracted the disease when she was younger, being “one of the lucky ones.” Except she wasn’t one of the lucky ones this time around, as she came down with the chicken pox

At first, she was very reticent to stay in bed and rest – so much so that she tried to trick Lee into going into town to get her chamomile tea (as they were out of it at home) – but he caught her getting out of bed to read. Sadly, the disease began to take effect on her, making her very ill. In fact, she became so ill that Faith had to miss the stagecoach that would get her started on her trek to Chicago.

As for the case against Henry Gowen, one of his customers was suing him for providing him with low-grade petroleum. Naturally, Bill was wary because of Henry’s past and Lucas was extremely upset because he didn’t want to be involved in any nefarious actions. While Bill worked to find the right people for the jury – which Lucas demanded to give Henry a little more time – Nathan set off to investigate the plant where the test was conducted.

During his investigation he quickly realized that the man in charge at that plant, and more so his son, falsified the tests because they were angry at Henry Gowen. They blamed Henry for their business falling apart and wanted to get revenge on him. However, in the end, when Lucas told Henry that he is an ethical man, a small glimmer of the Henry from the past seemed to rear its ugly head.

There were also the looks and comments made between Lucas, Nathan and Elizabeth that will make for an interesting case of a love triangle as the season continues.

At the end of the episode, Carson was able to tell Faith that she could make it to Chicago after all – with a bit of last-minute jumps from train to stagecoach – and minutes to spare to get to her first class – but she could make it. They shared their “I love you” with the main characters watching.
