Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist Roundtable: Zoey’s Extraordinary Best Friend

By  |

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is back after a month and we are truly excited to see what they do with this show. Roz and I (and occasionally Mel) will be covering each week with the things that were Music To Our Ears and the things that were more Nails On A Chalkboard. Join us won’t you?

Zoey tries to figure out how to control her new abilities while navigating her best friends’ romantic feelings for her. A new medical victory for Mitch gives the family hope.

Music To Our Ears

Roz: Peter Gallaghar should sing “Moondance” over and over again for me. Oh and Mo is wonderful as a go-between for Zoey for who doesn’t understand music and someone who does.

Leah: I love the scene with Max and Mitch. It was a sweet little moment to let us know A. Max is a good guy and B. Zoey isn’t as “not into Max” as she wants to believe. I am also actually glad for Autumn too. Too much too soon with our main “couple” would ruin things.

Mel: I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoy hearing and seeing Peter Gallaghar perform musical numbers. It gives us such a wonderful glimpse into his character. The idea to give Mitch the Taboo buzzer so he can communicate a little was clever and funny and poignant. I’m impressed with how the show is portraying Mitch’s illness and the effect it has on those around him as well as his own frustration with being trapped in his body.

I think I’m going to like Mo more than expected from her appearance in the pilot. Her envy that Zoey gets to see “personal concerts” made me chuckle but also presented a valuable alternative perspective to Zoey’s “problem”.

For me, the best thing about this episode was watching Zoey listen to advice about how to be a leader, figure out how to do it her way, then act on it. I’m sure she’ll continue to need advice as she finds her footing in her new role, but this is a good start and neatly demonstrated what she was trying to say about the importance of keeping a work journal in that first, disastrous meeting.

Nails On The Chalkboard

Roz: Zoey, why are you trying to set up Max with anyone? I do have weird feelings about Max’s feelings for Zoey, but it’s going in a direction that is so awkward.

Leah: Did Zoey actually tell her Mom that her Dad maybe wanted to “fool around”? That was just too awkward for me. Also, a song by “maybe” Whitney Houston? Is Zoey kidding? She knows none of the songs. None. Honestly.

Mel: The whole Mom and Dad should fool around bit was borderline squicky for me. Thank goodness for that buzzer so he could confirm that he wanted to “moondance” with Maggie or that would’ve tipped right over into a vat full of squick.

Music

Roz: A slowed-down version of “Dance with Somebody” was something I didn’t think I’d want to listen to more, but it was worth it.

Mel: Stephanie Styles’ cover of “Dance with Somebody” was beautiful. Did anyone else have a Pitch Perfect moment when Zoey started singing “I’ve Got the Music in Me“?
