Salute to Rising Stars

By  |

It’s that time again to salute those actresses who are on the move, actresses who deserve a little extra attention for their latest work, those actresses who are rising stars. Landing that crucial role in a TV movie or guest appearance in a successful show or film makes all the difference for aspiring actors.

Let’s take a look at the next two actresses who viewers should keep their eye on:

Emma Corrin

Newcomer Emma was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. She attended a private Catholic boarding school for girls and later graduated from St. John’s College, Cambridge University, where she studied education, English and drama. In fact, she graduated from there last summer.

With only two credits to her name, a 2018 short film called Alex’s Dream and appearing in one episode of the detective drama Grantchester, she landed two roles that will change her life. The first is playing Esme Winikus in the EPIX drama Pennyworth, which is based on the life of DC legend Alfred Pennyworth and the even bigger role of Princess Diana in the upcoming fourth season of The Crown, which will air in 2020 on Netflix.

Her first role in a box office film will be the upcoming Kiera Knightley led Misbehaviour, which tells the story of the protesters who disrupted the 1970 Miss World pageant. The controversy started because there were two entries from South Africa, a black candidate and a white candidate. Corrin will play Miss South Africa Jillian Jessup while Knightley will play Sally Alexander, a feminist activist.

Jodie Turner-Smith

Jodie comes to us from Jamaica. She got her start in modeling and then got her first big break in a few episodes of True Blood, playing the bit part of Siren #2. But over the last few TV seasons, she has appeared as Sgt. Azima Kandie in the final two seasons of The Last Ship; as Melantha Jhirl in the short-lived Syfy thriller Nightflyers and as Josie in the Cinemax series Jett.

She will soon be seen in the box office movie Queen & Slim alongside Get Out and Black Panther actor Daniel Kaluuya; and then will appear alongside Colin Farrell and Clifton Collins, Jr. in After Yang. She will also appear as statesque model Grace Jones n the Marvin Gaye biopic Sexual Healing, starring opposite Jesse L. Martin.
