DEADLY CLASS: Advanced Review

By  |

DEADLY CLASS is a new show on Syfy that puts Lana Candor (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before) back on our screens and we could not be more overjoyed.

Set in a dark, heightened world against the backdrop of the late ’80s counterculture, DEADLY CLASS follows the story of Marcus (Benjamin Wadsworth), a teen living on the streets who is recruited into Kings Dominion, an elite private academy where the world’s top crime families send their next generations.

This show is dark and a little crazy, and did we say dark? Syfy has hyped Lana’s role, due to her recent success, but the show is really belongs to Benjamin Wadsworth. It will be interesting to see how he carries the role. Rounding out the main cast is:

Maria Gabriela de Faria as Maria

Liam James as Billy

Luke Tennie as Willie

Benedict Wong as Master Lin

When watching I found I immediately thought of King’s Dominion as Hogwarts, they even have a potions class. HOWEVER, the whole point of King’s Dominion is to graduate you a proficient killer, so all black arts and no feel good wizard looking out for you. Of course any show set in a high school like environment will be full of teen angst and this is no different. You add in the children of Yakuza, Cartels and White Supremacists, set it against the backdrop of the 80’s and you have a lot of drama.

The Not so Good:

  • It’s hard to watch – and not always in a good way.
  • It’s scattered. There is a lot of things going on and not a ton of connective strands – yet.
  • Comics are hard to convert into TV Shows
  • There was a lot of telling in the pilot that I would have rather been shown with action than with words.

The Good:

  • The show builds after the pilot and I have said time and time again, pilots are hard to get perfect.
  • The actors are perfectly cast. You believe they are their characters.
  • The chemistry or lack there of is just right. I found myself believing the bad and loving the good.
  • The fight scenes are really well done.
