ROUNDTABLE: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “The Devil Complex”

By  |

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. aired a new episode on Friday night that featured the greatest fears of both Simmons and Fitz, a revelation to Simmons that viewers learned last week and learning only slightly a little more about Hale.

Join Rueben, Roz and Karen as they, once again, discuss all the crazy that went down in Friday night’s new episode of the show:

These writers! They fooled us again, or at least they fooled me. Fallout from framework!Fitz came when we least expected it. Did you catch it before the reveal? (more about Fitz in Q5).

Rueben: For once, I didn’t see the reveal until it was right there in front of my face, as I thought for sure that framework!Fitz was an anomaly especially after the astronaut showed up as Jemma’s worst fear. They fooled me this time.

Roz: I didn’t think about Framework Hydra!Fitz until he started talking about what needed being done. Which is good, but also very bad. He’s not cut out for that sort of emotional trauma.

Karen: Like I said, they totally fooled me. I knew that framework!Fitz would cause trauma to our kinder, gentler Fitz that he might have to deal with at some point, but this was a surprising time to bring that back out, and also completely genius. It’s what he needed to get the job done, but yeah, I agree Roz, he’s been through so much over the last few years – I’m not sure how this is going to pan out.

Yo-Yo Robot Arms! (sorry, lame Inspector Gadget joke). I’m digging that schematic. She’s gonna be CUT. Do you think she’ll be satisfied once they get her kitted out? Are you anticipating any bells and whistles?

Rueben: I don’t think Yo-Yo will ever be fully satisfied with the robot arms, but at the very least I think she’ll come to terms with her “new” future with those robot arms. I can’t imagine that Mack won’t give them some kind of bells and whistles whether she wants them or not. What those will be, though, I have no idea.

Roz: She’ll get the bells and whistles whether she wants them or not, but I love that we’re not going to see her without arms much longer.

Karen: I think she’ll get the upgrades even though she protested, because hello… it’s SHIELD. I’ll be glad to see her without the strangely too-wide shirt. 🙂

Deke told Jemma about his lineage. Smart or no?

Rueben: It was important that he come clean given the situation at hand. I can’t imagine he would’ve been able to keep his mouth shut anyway. I’m honestly glad that Jemma knows. And how about her throwing up right after? That’s not nerves, I’m guessing she’s pregnant…

Roz: Yes it was smart, because I think that will at least give FitzSimmons more purpose. They know they have a kid and that she has Deke. That’s a big hope to live for.

Karen: Perfect timing. Jemma needed it in order to keep her hope alive right in that moment. Also, agreed on the pregnancy speculation. I mean, we know she has a kid, so…

What a shock (not). Hale’s got an eeeeeviiill agenda and now she has a card to play. Do you see any possible next moves? Anything about that last scene?

Rueben: I was totally thrown by that last scene. “Hail Hydra” and the confederacy. What is that all about? Am I missing something important from the Marvel Universe since I’m not an avid comic book reader? Help me, Karen, you’re my only hope (to understand all this). Anything to do with Hydra cannot end well.

Roz: I’m guessing that the reveal of that big guy was what everyone saw a WonderCon (they got the last scene of next week’s episode, but I didn’t get much more on who the person is), but why can’t Hydra just die? I know when you cut off one, two grow in it’s place, but really?

Karen: I sent a clue to Rueben about the Hydra agent, but I’m not sure how much to reveal here. He’s Kree, and his name is Qovas. The takeaways for future reference are the mention of “The Confederacy” and the way he had, and proposed Hale use Odium.

Rueben: Yes, you did, Karen; and that helped SO much! But, like you, I don’t want to reveal too much if there are others out there who are a little clueless like me and want to be surprirsed.

Okay, back to framework!Fitz fallout. Do you think Daisy and Jemma truly understand why he made the choice that he did? Will they forgive?

Rueben: Holy crap, I was almost screaming at the TV when Daisy asked Fitz, “who are you talking to.” That’s when I realized I had been fooled. I can’t imagine that Daisy will forgive him any time soon. Jemma, armed with what Deke told her, might be able to come to grips with what Fitz did and be able to forgive him quicker than Daisy. It’s gonna take a LOT for Daisy to forgive him.

Roz: I think it’ll take some very serious conversations for Fitz and Daisy to get back to their old relationship, but Jemma with Deke’s knowledge will be easier to mend. I just feel like he’s been through so much emotionally – with being separated from the team for so long and all the Framework business that he can’t take more from himself.

Karen: Jemma will forgive for sure, but getting back to normal will take work on both sides. They may have to make a new normal, but that’s happened before. Daisy’s another story. Understanding why is one thing, but forgiveness is another. That will be a hard road to hoe for her. She’ll try for Jemma’s sake if not for any other reason, and I think she knows Fitz is a good person underneath that evil persona. That counts for a lot.

VIP? Standout scenes? Overall thoughts? Go for it.

Rueben: Honestly, I actually shed a few tears when Deke was telling Jemma the truth so I’d say that scene moved me. That being said, I think Deke just might be the VIP for me this week. It wasn’t that he put his life on the line, fought down a group of bad guys BUT he did open up to Jemma. On the other hand, I have to worry if Coulson made the right decision going with Hale. That can’t possibly end well either.

Roz: Yeah, Deke’s my VIP just for bringing light into what is really effing dark right now.

Karen: So much emotion in this episode, and I agree that Deke is probably VIP. I LOVED the scene where Jemma and Leo were talking about hypenating their last names to Simmons-Fitz. Ian was also amazing as both sides of Fitz, so I’ll give him a nod as well as co-VIP or at least close call runner up.
