ONE CHICAGO Women: Chicago Med 1×13 & Chicago Fire 4×18 recap

By  |

A christening and a wedding in the ONE CHICAGO world calls for some celebrating, but not before a whole lot of drama takes place. Read on to find out what the leading ladies of  Chicago Med and Chicago Fire got up to this week…

Sharon Goodwin: Sharon’s husband has his eyes set on retirement, more specifically spending his retirement in the Maldives and wants Sharon to retire with him. It’s a nice thought but for now the chief administrator has her hands full as per usual. Dr Halstead comes to her after a patient’s wife dies, as the husband wants to harvest his wife’s eggs, but the situation becomes tricky when it appears that his late wife was on birth control. Then Sharon is less than impressed when med student Sarah drills into a patient’s brain without supervision – thankfully Dr. Choi speaks up and says that she did it under his orders.

April Sexton: When a young boy is brought in after swallowing magnets, the distraught single father takes a shining to April. At first the nurse doesn’t see it, even after Maggie gleefully points it out to her. She finally realises when he asks her out on a date. She politely declines stating that the staff are discouraged from dating patients or patients’ family, but she is still there to support him when his son takes a turn for the worst. After his son’s surgery was a success, April points out to him that he’ll be around for a couple more days and that she’ll see him around. Looks like someone might be changing their point of view. April also pops up in Chicago Fire this week in relation to the case involving Sylvie Brett.

Dr. Natalie Manning: Nat’s mother-in-law is pressuring her to get Owen baptised, but Nat doesn’t feel right about it since she herself is not religious. Will Halstead notices that something is plaguing her and she shares her troubles with him. Being raised as a catholic himself, Will offers to speak to his old priest to set something up for her. Nat accepts his offer but clearly has second doubts when Will comes back to her quite quickly. In the end she decides to decline Will and his old priest’s offer and do things her own way, which is having Owen baptised in front of her “family” at the hospital. This also looks to be the thing that triggers Will to realise (okay and with a bit of a talking to from Maggie) that he needs to move on from his crush on Nat. On the professional front, Nat treats a young boy who has swallowed magnets and calls in Dr Connor Rhodes for an opinion. They end up disagreeing on what course of action to take, but that’s all put aside when the boy starts vomiting blood and is rushed to surgery and Nat has to step in to help despite it not being her specialty. It sure looked like the paediatrician got a rush from it afterwards. It also looked like there were some little sparks between her and Dr Rhodes as he shares a little tidbit about the way he was raised, which then helps Nat come to a decision about Owen’s baptism. I don’t know about you, but back in the first episode when she first met Connor on the rooftop, I actually thought that they were going to have a thing, not her and Will. So I’m interested to see if the writers are going to develop anything between Nat and Connor.

Maggie Lockwood: You can always trust Maggie to see sparks and tell it like it is. This week she notices a young patient’s dad vibing on April and warns the nurse that she needs to be careful. She also gives Will a reality check about boundaries with Nat, which then contributes to him realising that he needs to let her go and start to move on. Maggie also deals with a bedpan misorder, which gives her and Goodwin a good laugh.

Sarah Reese: The episode kicks off with the med student freaking out because it’s Match Day and soon she’ll find out where her residency will be. Her boyfriend and lab technician Joey tries to calm her down and tells her that she’ll get the pathology spot at Chicago Med for sure.

Ultimately he is right, but when a patient who seemingly has a sinus infection collapses because of an air bubble in his brain, it’s up to Sarah to drill a hole in his head to save his life since Dr. Choi is with another patient. She does is successfully and although she gets into trouble with Sharon Goodwin (although Dr Choi comes to the rescue and has Sarah’s back), she feels good after saving the man’s life and it makes her reconsider whether the decision that she had made was really the best one. As she ponders this, Natalie happens to see her and congratulates her and also tells her that she will be missed since she is part of their “family”.

Gabriella Dawson: The Firehouse is in high spirits after Casey’s alderman victory. There is an awkward moment for Dawson and Casey though when the press print a picture of the pair and refer to Dawson as Casey’s wife. They manage to laugh it off though and she then gets stuck into helping him with all the requests he is receiving now that he is alderman. We love that Dawson is going above her role as supportive partner and helping him out by manning the phone and email requests and organising information for him. Later during girls time with Brett and Kidd, Dawson admits that she is happy with the way things are at the moment and doesn’t see the need to get married.  This makes things a little awkward at Mouch and Platt’s wedding when Casey confesses that the article made him think about their status and how he wants more and still wants to marry her someday. Dawson tells him that she is happy with the way things are now and with him taking on a new role they should wait until the dust settles a bit. While he agrees to it, you can tell her response is not what he wanted to hear and when she says they need to celebrate his alderman win properly, he brushes her off and excuses himself to go and congratulate the newlyweds. Ouch!

Sylvie Brett: This week Brett and Jimmy Borelli respond to a call where a victim has been shot in the leg. When Jimmy goes to get the stretcher from the ambulance, a gunman appears and shoots the victim dead right in front of Brett. He then asks her for her ID, which has her address on it, before warning her not to talk to the cops and then runs off. With the incident clearly shaking her, she’s a bit hesitant to talk to the officer sent to the Chicago Med after the patient dies and tries to get a hold of Dawson’s brother Chicago P.D.‘s Antonio. After the gunman reappears while Brett is finishing up a call, she finally tells Boden, who is furious that she didn’t tell him sooner so that he could protect her and then finally Antonio appears. Police detail is organised and Dawson and Kidd also stay with her. Yet the gunman manages to call her on her phone and tells her that they can’t protect her forever. The next day on shift, Boden commands Brett to stay at the firehouse in the dispatch room and sends Dawson to partner with Borelli for shift. The first call they get is for a gunshot victim and when Borelli checks the victim’s ID, they realise that it is the same guy after Brett. What they don’t realise is that the guy was also shot in the head and he ends up dying at the scene and Brett is brought down to ID him. Also Brett related in this episode, it would appear that Otis still has a crush on her and when he tries to make a move Borelli interrupts and Otis soon realises he doesn’t stand a chance. He doesn’t wallow for long though, connecting with a stranger and Mouch and Platt’s wedding.

Trudy Platt: Despite Chicago P.D. being on a mini hiatus, we still get our fix this week thanks to Platt’s wedding to Chicago Fire‘s Mouch. Just days out from the wedding, Mouch is starting to get cold feet and it takes best man Herrmann (we’re not sure what happened with Trudy’s brother Logan, but he got put on the No Fly list…) to ease his fears. Unbeknownst to Mouch,  Platt was also having those fears, in particular the ones where both did not know how they were going to keep up the classy and sophisticated activities they had been doing whole dating into married life. Dawson reassures her that Mouch doesn’t care about those things and in true Platt fashion she bounces back with a few insults at Dawson and Burgess and their lack of wedded life, pulls the padding out of her breasts and is ready to marry Mouch! It’s just a shame that they skimped on the wedding and we missed out on seeing her vows. I was quite disappointed with the lack of “weddingness” we got in the end!

Kim Burgess: As Platt’s pillar of support, Burgess pops up in Chicago Fire and after Platt insults her and Dawson for their broken engagements, there is a great moment where Burgess grabs a bottle of alcohol nearby and just chugs it!

Chicago Med and Chicago Fire air Tuesdays at 9/8c and 10/9c respectively, on NBC.  New episodes of Chicago P.D. return April 27 at 10/9c.

Ange is the Girl from Oz who travelled the States. Teen dramas, rom-comedies and superhero shows are her weakness. She also loves a good crime and medical drama and probably watches more TV than she can handle... You can contact her at ange@nicegirlstv.com.
