Before we tune in to new episodes of NBC’s Chicago Med and Chicago Fire tonight, let’s catch up on what the heroines of these shows got up to last week…

Gabriela Dawson: The last episode ended with Chief Boden being arrested for assault (he was set up obviously), and in this latest ep Dawson is convinced that it’s all part of some conspiracy orchestrated by Chief Riddle and that even newbie Captain Patterson is involved. While she has no proof, especially about the latter, the female firefighter makes it clear to Patterson that she doesn’t trust him and isn’t afraid to throw some shade at him in order to defend Chief Boden.

Sylvie Brett: There’s a big important gala happening and poor unlucky-in-love Otis has now decided that Brett is a pretty cool chick and that he’d like to be her date to the gala. Brett initially turns him down, after all she did date fellow firefighter Cruz, who also happens to be Otis’s good friend and roommate and that didn’t work out, so we can understand why she’d be hesitant to go out with another colleague. In this episode, Ambulance 61, Truck 3 and Truck 81 answer a call where a man in unconscious on a roof and another is hanging over the side of the building. In order to save the second man, Severide lowers himself down to him and asks two of his men to hold onto the rope and don’t let go.

However, the guys struggle to hold the weight, and a quick-thinking Brett jumps in to help them and stops them from slipping. Afterwards, inspired by the adrenaline, she decides to take a chance and tells Otis that she has  changed her mind and would like to go to the gala with him.

Jessica ‘Chili’ Chilton: Chili and candidate Borelli are still a thing, stealing kisses in corners at work and exchanging flirty glances. Oh the excitement of a new relationship!

Sharon Goodwin: Apart from making sure everything is running smoothly in the ER and showing up to Natalie’s baby shower, we don’t see much of this Chief Administrator. We hope we get to see some of her back story in episodes to come!

April Sexton: When a 14-year-old girl is rushed into the ER and it’s realised that she has literally just given birth, it’s April who runs out with Dr. Rhodes to find the newborn baby (ultimately discovered in a backpack) and assists saving the child’s life. April also continues to support Nat.

Dr Natalie Manning: After spotting her mother-in-law chatting to Maggie, Nat discovers that her friends are throwing her a surprise baby shower at Molly’s that night and Maggie convinces Nat to come and act surprised. Before the shower though, a lot is going on in the hospital that the paediatrician has to tend to. When a 14-year-old girl is brought in and it is discovered that she not only just gave birth but also left the baby in a backpack not far from the hospital, Nat finds herself getting quite invested in the case and defending the scared and desperate young girl to her colleagues, particularly Dr. Ethan Choi. Nat also tracks down the young girl’s sister after she discovers that the girl is in the system because her parents are not around. The girl has gotten into quite a bit of trouble in the past and her sister is not willing to jeopardise the good things in her life to help her, which astounds Nat, a big believer in family. As well as the girl, Nat also works to save the baby. When Nat goes to get the last tank of nitric oxide because the baby’s right lung has collapsed, Dr. Will Halstead swoops in to take it to save his patient. When Nat protests, Dr. Halstead snaps at her to think like a doctor not a pregnant woman. Thankfully the baby survives, but what a low blow from her friend!

Maggie Lockwood: Unbeknownst to Nat, Maggie has been helping Nat’s mother-in-law prepare a surprise baby shower for the paediatrician. Maggie had invited Nat to a “girl’s night” with her and April, but when Nat spots her mother-in-law delivering last minute things to Maggie at the hospital, the ruse is up and Maggie has to convince Nat to just go along with the surprise. With her loyalty and sass, Maggie is becoming a favourite character of mine and I hope to see and learn more about her!

Sarah Reese: This episode, the med student works with Dr. Charles on a case concerning an elderly woman who seemingly has dementia. As she works with Dr. Charles, they realise that the woman has been misdiagnosed and that she does not have dementia, there was just extra fluid in her brain and putting pressure on it. What’s refreshing about Sarah is that unlike interns on other medical shows, she is not confident – she’s awkward, lacks bedside manner and still has a lot more to learn. That’s a more realistic portrayal of a medical student (or any student for that matter) right?

Chicago Med airs Tuesdays at 9/8c, followed by Chicago Fire airs Tuesdays at 10/9c, both on NBC. Chicago P.D. is currently on hiatus and will return on January 6, 2016.

Ange is the Girl from Oz who travelled the States. Teen dramas, rom-comedies and superhero shows are her weakness. She also loves a good crime and medical drama and probably watches more TV than she can handle... You can contact her at ange@nicegirlstv.com.
