MODERN FAMILY RECAP: HALEY’S 21ST BIRTHDAY

It’s Haley’s 21st birthday and the family came out to celebrate with her! Ah to be 21 again.  Do you remember your 21st birthday? I was in Chicago on a casino boat with my family and I had a blast! Let’s see the shenanigans that occur with Haley on her 21st!

Claire, Gloria, Cam and Mitch took Haley to a bar to celebrate her big day. Cam and Mitch bought shots for everyone to toast Haley’s birthday. Cam toasted to her first drink and before he could finish the toast, Haley took the shot like a champ. Clearly not her first drink.

Jay and Phil went to the car dealership to pick up Haley’s new car (a birthday gift from Claire and Phil). Phil needed to sign a few papers but Jay didn’t trust him alone with the car salesman, so he came in and started to try to bargain with the guy. The car salesman couldn’t give him a better deal, and Phil just wanted to get the car and leave but Jay wouldn’t let him. He wanted to prove that he could get a better deal so he dragged Phil out of there.

Alex was in charge of the kids while the adults were out. Lily asked her if she knew where babies came from (tough one). Alex blew her off so she asked Luke. Luke told her she needed to get a pen and a bagel. Be afraid, be very afraid.

At the bar, Cam and Mitch gave Haley her birthday gift and they hoped their “ginstincts” (gay instincts) were on point. The only time they missed the mark was when Claire told them what to buy for her. They gave her some cute tennis shoes, and Haley fake liked them. Once Claire said how much she loved them, Cam and Mitch knew they missed the mark. They started to loosen up and they played “would you rather” with Tom Hardy or George Clooney (Tom Hardy won of course). Haley was hesitant to talk about boys and sex with her Mom, but Claire wanted to prove to Haley that she could be her friend now that she was an adult. Haley appreciated it and told her mom that she wanted to get a tattoo but was afraid she wouldn’t let her. Gloria said it was a great idea and Claire acted like it was cool, but she really hated the idea. Then Gloria suggested that they got matching mother/daughter tattoos and Haley loved the idea! She thought it would be a special thing that the two of them shared forever. After Haley sounded so passionate about it, Claire agreed to do it. Cam said he and Mitch should do it too (so they could stay cool).

Jay took Phil to another car dealership with the hopes of getting a better deal. Jay was wrong and his car salesman friend basically told them if they could get the other deal, they should. Jay wouldn’t accept that. He told Phil he was going to handle it. He came back with the keys and the car and told Phil he got a better deal (after he wore down the car salesman). Phil was so impressed until the car salesman told him that he really didn’t get a better deal. He paid $1000 more than the price Phil had and just paid the difference. Jay told the car salesman to tell Phil that he paid less so Jay would look like the hero. Aw. In his own weird way, Jay really cared what Phil thought about him and Phil appreciated that.

At the house, Alex overheard Luke and Manny going back and forth about dating (the beginning of the “where babies come from” speech). Manny was taking the side of having a special romantic moment and Luke was taking the side of just getting down to business. Alex told them to knock it off and once she found out what story they were getting to, she told them they couldn’t tell Lily where babies came from. They told Lily they didn’t know where babies came from. Lily being the cutie that she is, said she would tell them. The whole time she was asking if they knew where babies came from because she wanted to tell them, because apparently she had it all figured out.

At the tattoo parlor, Claire got a symbol for mother on her ankle. It was Haley’s turn to go and she punked out. She said after seeing how painful it looked she didn’t want to do it anymore. Claire told her she better do it and Haley was saved by the bell when Phil drove up in her new car outside. Haley ran outside and hugged her dad. She loved her car! Cam and Mitch backed out on getting tattoos as well. Claire was the only trooper. Definitely a night she won’t ever forget.

At the house, Lily explained in detail where babies came from. She said, first you put eggs and a tadpole in water; the woman then has to drink that water. Then the woman and her mate jump on the bed a few times. Then a year later, the woman pees and a baby comes out. Luke, Manny and Alex stared blankly at her and Alex said, “Wow!”  My sentiments exactly.
