REVENGE: Emily VanCamp’s Vengeful Return to Television

By  |

ABC’s new show Revenge stars Emily Van Camp, leading her own show after the demise of Brothers and Sisters. VanCamp plays the newest girl in Southamptons, Amanda Clark. However, Amanda isn’t the previous “girl next door” character we meet early in the episode; she’s actually returning to the scene of a childhood trauma—her father was set-up and arrested back when she was nine years old. She goes back as Emily Thorne, a young woman seeking vengeance for her father’s wrongful death in prison.

My first thought about the show was curiosity as to how it would blend on ABC or if it would be similar to that of something on CW, a more soap-like drama for a younger crowd. I was happy to find that Revenge brings both good drama and smart writing to a forefront. The plot was interesting and endearing, I for one am very excited to see what Revenge brings this season.

In the first episode we witness a murder, an arrest, an affair plus a few other scandals on the side. The creativity behind each thread of the show makes it compelling and thrilling to watch. As the season progresses, we’ll see Emily unfold her plans and cross off the members on her revenge list, sort of a female version of Monte Cristo. We both hope for her success while also wondering why exactly we’re rooting for the bad guy. Her wicked mind—along with the endless sum of money left by her father—keep us intrigued as to what schemes she’ll come up with next.

Revenge premieres tonight at 10/9 c on ABC.
