Recap: Pretty Little Liars Finally Talk in “I Must Confess”

By  |

I have been waiting for this moment on Pretty Little Liars for a very long time! The girls finally told Dr. Sullivan everything that A has been putting them through since before Alison’s funeral. I had been thinking that if the girls could have someone on their side who believes them, they might be able to turn the tables on A. I’d like to see the four friends become the aggressors and start chasing after A for a change.

Spencer – She has had enough! She’s finished with being spied on everywhere she goes and with everything she does. So when she and Toby spot two shadows in Toby’s window, who they suspect is watching them, she goes to confront them. Too bad one of them turned out to be her father. Spencer finds out that Alison had Jason cut out of their grandmother’s will, and the DiLaurentis family hired Spencer’s dad to alter the date on the will so that suspicion, which already pointed to Jason, would be shifted away from him. But when Spencer presses her dad as to why he did something that could get him disbarred, he would not answer her. What is it that the DiLaurentis family holds over Mr. Hastings? You can bet Spencer will dig until she finds the answer.

Hannah – Trying to offer the olive branch to her soon-to-be step-sister, Hannah gifts Kate with equestrian books and a heart-felt apology. Kate seems to accept it and shows eagerness to move on, but my red flag waved frantically. I was screaming at my screen! Sure enough, Kate spikes Hannah’s lemonade and gets her drunk, then points her dad in Hannah’s direction. Thank goodness for Hannah’s grandmother (Betty Buckley)! I love this woman and I hope she stays around for a long time. She discovers that Kate tricked Hannah and confronts her. Now, Hannah throws down the gauntlet, but the damage between her and her father is already done. I say good riddance to old Tom. What a jerk! After all he put Hannah and Ashley through, he has the nerve to turn on his own daughter in defense of his new daughter. I’m sorry, but this is unforgivable and I hope that Grandma helps Hannah and Ashley kiss him off in style.

Aria – Ella and Byron argue over what is to be done with Mike. Ella shows her wonderful gift as a mother by living in denial that Mike could be suicidal. Aria comes upon this argument and goes to try talking to Mike, which doesn’t go well. When Ella comes into Mike’s room, there is a scuffle and Mike throws his laptop at Ella, possibly breaking her arm.  Of course, she begs Aria not to tell Byron what happened, because he might get Mike the actual help that he really needs. (I’m a little angry with Ella.) In the end, it’s Aria who breaks through to her brother and he turns to her for help. Good for Aria!

Emily – A is bound and determined to break Em. She sends her a text with a picture of Aria and Ezra, kissing, and instructions to tell Ella accompanied by another threat. Em goes for a run in the woods, which creeps me out and had me covering my eyes. But she ends up at Dr, Sullivan’s office and finds the other three girls are already there. Emily confesses that she was thinking about going to join her parents in Texas so that A can’t use her to hurt her friends. They reassure her that they all need to stick together if they are going to have a chance at beating A.

At this point, the girls spill the whole A story. Later, Dr. Sullivan receives a call, presumably from A, and she hears her own voice during this conversation with the girls. She call in the police to sweep for bugs, but they find nothing. Garrett is one of the two cops on the scene and I’m suspicious already.

As Dr. Sullivan is going over the girls’ files, something seems familiar to her. She calls Emily and tells her to meet her at her office – she knows who A is. Of course, it comes as no surprise when the girls all arrive at Dr. Sullivan’s office to find her gone. It’s maddening to come so close to unmasking A!

Closing thoughts:

Emily calls Maya – will this relationship resume or will A find a way to break it up again?

Jenna and Garrett – what the heck are they up to and why?

Dr. Sullivan addresses the issue of cyber-bullying, which is a new campaign that ABC Family has taken a serious interest in. This was a nice way to spotlight it on Pretty Little Liars.
