Do You Remember: The Carrie Diaries
Before he swiveled his hips and curled his lip as Elvis Presley in this year’s box office film Elvis, Austin Butler appeared in a short-lived teen comedy-drama on The CW called The Carrie Diaries, which was the prequel to the long-running HBO series Sex and the City and based on the 2010 book of the same name by Candace Bushnell.
The series starred AnnaSophia Robb (the box office film Soul Surfer and the limited series The Act) as the younger version of Carrie Bradshaw. The first season focused on Carrie’s junior year of high school in 1984 as she explored life in New York City while interning at a law firm office and secretly working at a magazine company. The second season focused on her expanding life in the city as well as the lives of her friends and boyfriend. The series ran for only two seasons, both of which consisted of 13 episodes, running from January 2013 to January 2014.
Austin played Sebastian Kydd, the new kid at Carrie’s high school, who was kicked out of his former high school for having sex with his art history teacher. He became Carrie’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, who eventually moved to Malibu in season two.
Among the other cast members were:
Ellen Wong (GLOW and Dark Matter), who played Carrie’s nerdy but sweet best friend Jill “Mouse” Chen;
Katie Findlay (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Walker Independence and Nancy Drew), who played Carrie’s other best friend Maggie Landers;
Stefania LaVie Owen (Messiah and Sweet Tooth), who played Carrie’s troubled, younger sister Dorrit Bradshaw;
Brendan Dooling, who played Walter “Walt” Reynolds;
Chloe Bridges (Pretty Little Liars and Maggie), who played Donna LaDonna, the most popular girl at Carrie’s high school;
Freema Agyeman (New Amsterdam and Doctor Who), who played Larissa Loughlin, the style editor at Interview magazine where Carrie worked;
Matt Letscher (The Flash and The Alienist), who played Carrie’s overprotective dad Tom Bradshaw; and,
Lindsey Gort (All Rise), who played the younger version of Samantha Jones in season two.
Season two saw the following in recurring roles:
Scott Cohen (Gilmore Girls and Necessary Roughness), who played Harlan Silver, a friend of Tom Bradshaw; and,
Chris Wood (Supergirl), who played Adam Weaver, Carrie’s first lover.
Had the show been renewed for a third season, the show’s showrunner Amy B. Harris revealed that the character of Miranda Hobbes would have been introduced as Mouse’s (one of Carrie’s best friends) roommate at Harvard.
Among the more notable guest stars who appeared in the show were Golden Globe Best Actress Winner MJ Rodriguez (Pose) and Julia Goldani Telles, who has gone on to appear in Bunheads, The Affair and The Girlfriend Experience.
The Carrie Diaries received mixed reviews from critics and viewers alike, earning an average of only 1.1 million viewers in its first season and an average of 820,000 viewers in season two.
