The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical Update and New York Comic Con 2022

About two months ago I reported on a lawsuit lodged by Netflix against The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical, and now there is a big update.

Basically the streaming service filed a copyright lawsuit against Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, the talented TikTok performers and Grammy winners behind the musical album, because they were making money from the musical album via live performances that were set to happen in the U.K.

Since Barlow and Bear do not own the copyright to Bridgerton, and – simply put – don’t have permission to use anything Bridgerton-related for monetary gains, they found themselves in legal trouble with the powerhouse service.

But now, it would seem the lawsuit has been dropped. Netflix Worldwide Entertainment, LLC and Netflix Studios, LLC dismissed “the action with prejudice,” but no “further reasoning” was provided for the dismissal. The dismissal did come just one day after Barlow and Bear were supposed to respond to Netflix’s first complaint that was made this summer.

Despite repeated objections, Barlow and Bear staged “a massive, for-profit stage show” in July and that was what caused the lawsuit to be filed. The lawsuit alleged the pair “misrepresented their affiliation with the Bridgerton series to its audience and sold unofficial merchandise during the show.” It added that their performance also featured “over a dozen songs that copied verbatim dialogue, character traits and expression, and other elements from Bridgerton the series.”

No further details are available, but I would surmise that the pair will not be moving forward with anything else that has to do with Bridgerton, which is a shame because a Broadway version of The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical would have been quite a spectacular show.
