Comic-Con 2022: What we’re excited about

By  |

It’s been three long years since NiceGirlsTV converged on San Diego for Comic-Con. I heard someone say, to a full panel room once, that there will never be another time where you are sitting with people who love this specific thing as much as you do. They weren’t wrong. SDCC is a lot of people and a lot of energy output but it is also the one place where everyone is excited and happy and overall just delighted to be there and see that one thing; that one comic book artist, TV show actor, or cosplay artist that brings them joy.

Joel Kinnaman – Much like Melissa is excited for Keanu Reeves I am excited for Joel Kinnaman. Ever since he was on The Killing I’ve made sure to tune into whatever he acts in. He’ll be in San Diego to promote his Apple TV+ show For All Mankind and I’m downright giddy. I don’t fan girl out very often but there is a little part of me that is worried I will black out when he starts talking. For All Mankind depicts “what would have happened if the global space race had never ended” after the Soviet Union succeeds in the first crewed Moon landing ahead of the United States. Did I mention I’m excited? Joel joins his castmates and the creative team behind For All Mankind onstage in Ballroom 20 on Friday @ 2:45 PM.

National Treasure: Edge of History – Disney+ has been hitting it out of the park with their shows lately and fingers crossed National Treasure isn’t any different. The cast is going to swing by Comic Con and it’s one of the shows I’m most looking forward to. National Treasure follows a Hispanic Latina-American 20-year-old DREAMer (played by Lisette Olivera) who sets off on an exploration to discover the mystery of her family history, and with the help of her friends seeks to recover historical lost treasure. Mystery – good. Treasure – good. Justin Bartha reprising his role as Riley Poole – good. Twist on the original plot – good. The National Treasure: Edge of History panel is Thursday @ 2:15 PM in Ballroom 20.

The Unknown – Some of my best Comic Con memories are from things I didn’t plan on doing. Sitting in a room waiting for a panel one year I got to hear NASA talk about missions to Mars. Another year I heard Anthony Bourdain talking about a comic book he had helped write. You just never know what or who you will have the privilege of interacting with. I can’t wait to find out what I accidentally get to learn about this year.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – This is my most anticipated show of 2022. After being traumatized by the Rankin & Bass animated movies as a child, I fell in love with LOTR at the midnight showing of Peter Jackson’s Fellowship of the Ring back in December 2001. I was even at the 2004 Oscar party hosted by TORn where PJ and crew showed up with a phalanx of statues after Return of the King swept the ceremony. And now Prime is giving us an entire series set in the Second Age. Can. Not. Wait. We’ll meet the cast and creative team who picked up the LOTR torch on Friday @ 10:30 AM in Hall H.

Ghosts – One of my favorite new shows is Ghosts on CBS, and they are coming in full force to SDCC! There’s a panel plus Pinecone Trooper Pete’s “Friend Zone” activation. In addition to archery and other Pinecone Trooper activities, there will be psychics and mediums on hand to give readings. But really, I’m delighted to see the cast and creative team get the Comic-Con reception they deserve. The Ghosts panel is Thursday @ 1:00 PM in Ballroom 20.

Star Trek – The past few years have seen a revitalization of the Star Trek universe thanks to a host of new series. I’m a long-time fan, having come on board with what are now referred to as “legacy series” – The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. This year Paramount+ is bringing cast and creatives from three series to Comic-Con: Lower Decks, Picard, and Strange New Worlds. Plus there’s the 10 Forward activation and the Wrath of P’Khan Coolhaus Ice Cream Truck to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. (Bonus: Coolhaus is women-owned!) The Star Trek panel is Saturday @ 12:45 PM in Hall H; 10 Forward is open throughout the con; and Coolhaus will be at Petco Park on Saturday.

Keanu Reeves – I can’t talk about this one. Trying to keep my heart rate within viable parameters. Keanu will be on a panel for his comic book series BRZRKR in Hall H on Friday @ 3 PM.
