By  |

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘s aired a new episode from its second season this week. Let’s first find out what this episode was about.

Here is a synopsis for this week’s episode entitled “Zoey’s Extraordinary Birthday“:

It’s Zoey’s 30th birthday, but before she can celebrate properly she must confront her unresolved feelings for the men in her life.

Join Nice Girls Roz, Karen,, and Rueben as they share their thoughts on this latest, new episode of the second season [spoiler alert]:

Roz: This got me in all the right places. I love that the idea of this party to Zoey ranged from exciting to terrified to a little bit embarrassing, but in the end, I think it hit on so many of the beats that weren’t addressed last week.

Watching the Aussie neighbor sing his own song to Zoey was too much, but I think it highlights all the problems that Zoey’s had with the three men in her life. The situation with Max is so awkward, but I think that ending number with Simon plays so much into the triangle or quadrilateral of her life.

The Tobin and Mackenzie moments were making me think that something later is due for them.

Rueben: This was a fun episode to watch even with all the awkward moments – especially the song by Aiden (the hot Aussie neighbor); and even more awkward when David realized the song – the first original song included in the show, by the way – was about his sister. AWKWARD!! And speaking of Aiden, I’m pleased that Zoey (“does she really need the ‘y’ on her name?”) told Aiden “we’re not going to happen…we’re in different places.” I was so very thankful she did that! Aiden is great eye candy, but he’s not the right man for her.

And even with the awkward “mature conversation” between Zoey and Max, they came out still being friends and being able to “allow” the other to move forward: Max with Rose – who I am surprised to say I’m not bothered by AND Simon and Zoey – who I’m actually kinda happy to see together. Neither of these relationships may last, but I’m not opposed to them (for now anyway). That heartsong by Simon was quite sultry, wasn’t it?

I liked the moment between David and his mom with little baby Miles – that baby is so darn cute, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t really like children so that’s saying A LOT! It was nice for them to have a moment to talk about Mitch without all of us getting weepy-eyed. The ache of losing him will always be there, of course, but they could talk about him fondly without all the heartbreaking pain.

How cute are Perry (the hot fire marshal) and Mo together?! I really enjoyed the whole “Kiss Me” song and dance number throughout the house at Zoey’s party. I’m also glad that Mo didn’t let the fact that Perry has two kids be a deal-breaker. I look forward to seeing how their story will continue to play out.

I wrote in my notes “who saw that coming?!” with the scenes between Tobin and Mackenzie. I know I didn’t, but somehow I’m not bothered by it. Perhaps this will help Tobin grow up a bit. Maybe! Kinda? Sorta… But, we still need to see a storyline about the girl programmers on the 4th floor. When do we get that, huh?

Karen: We’re all on the same page this week. A delightful and fun episode.

Personally, I despise birthday parties, but I love my birthday (which was last week). I have told people in the past that if I get sung to, I’ll get up and leave. I felt *all* of Zoey’s feelings. Side note here: We had a beloved cat named “Zoe,” and not only do I forget the ‘y’ when I type out the name of this show, I loved that they had a convo about it regarding her balloons.

Aussie boy is cute for sure, but Zoey absolutely made the correct choice. She and Max had a wonderful and loving conversation, and that reinforces the thought that she’s mature and adult in her romantic interactions. Now Max can pursue his affection towards Rose, and Zoey can finally dive into her ongoing affection for Simon. I think this is perfect timing. He’s been single for some time now, and they can start on a solid footing. As I said last week, I wouldn’t be opposed to Zoey coming to the realization that she’s happy without a man in her life, but I don’t think that’s in the cards.

I’m conflicted about the Tobin/Mackenzie storyline. He’s never been my favorite character, but he seems to be getting much better in the whole misogyny department. If it means we get more of the girl programmers, I’m all for it. I still think they’re criminally underused.

Perry THFM (The Hot Fire Marshall) and Mo are GREAT together. I tweeted out that “hot” is an understatement. He’s a perfect match for Mo. Mo can be flighty and superficial, and he might be able to counterbalance that. I foresee there *might* be some complications regarding his divorce and fatherhood, but let’s wait until that happens.

And allow me to reiterate… #TeamSimon all the way right now. Let’s do this already!

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist will air its next new episode, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Mystery” on NBC on Sunday, April 11 at 9PM.
