A Million Little Things: “timing”

By  |

We got another new episode of A Million Little Things this week on ABC. Here is the official synopsis for this episode (season 3, episode 7) entitled “timing”:

Regina is faced with making difficult changes to keep Someday afloat during the COVID lockdown, while Eddie struggles to keep his secret drug addiction under wraps. Elsewhere, Maggie fears she may have revealed a bit too much on her podcast.

Nice Girls Cay and Rueben share their thoughts on this episode [spoiler alert]:

Cay:

Watching the pandemic play out in slow motion and watching people do a bunch of things that we now know don’t really matter while ignoring things that do is VERY painful. It’s just too soon! I want it to end, I don’t want to relive it from the beginning. Writing it in/acknowledging it is one thing, but “starting over” with it from the beginning might be more than I can handle. (Don’t even get me started on Grey’s Anatomy’s COVID plotlines…)

So Gary purposely bailed on meeting Darcy’s son last episode because of his past trauma when his parents’ divorced. Ok, so why did we see him go to his place [presumably to see Maggie] and then turnaround when he saw Jamie – wouldn’t he have assumed he’d be there as he presumably was who told Jamie how to find her?

Darcy’s son has become a germophobe (or always was one) and he’s freaking out about touching things that Gary has touched, while they are breathing the same air indoors with no mask. Obviously, the initial focus in the pandemic was on handwashing, but Gary and Darcy wore masks to go to Target and Regina’s staff are wearing masks, so this is a bit incongruous as mask wearing became more common AFTER we realized it was airborne. Speaking of Target…I’ve never seen this show do a product placement before and this one was so egregious – the bags are one thing, but then advertising Target drive up (even though it is awesome) was super forced. This is not the kind of show to get away with blatant commercials in the dialogue.

I absolutely detest the current Katherine-Eddie storyline. It seems that Katherine is being set up to have an affair with the other attorney and Eddie is way off the wagon. Yes, addicts are going to be addicts, but seriously, Dakota covering for him big time? I screamed at the TV when she did that, and not in a good way. It’s hard to see a way out of the current situation with Katherine and Eddie that doesn’t make everything worse, and I’m so done with their suffering. I’m going to be pretty disgusted if Katherine has an affair and if Eddie doesn’t get himself sorted out and make some progress soon. Hopefully the NA meeting is a sign…

The Dakota plot did have me wondering how fast Theo is growing up. He’s doing algebra (or at least pre-algebra) now? I was in the “advanced math” group in my school and took pre-algebra in 7th and algebra in 8th grade. Unless that has changed, that would make Theo at least 12-13 already? But, if he’s that old, why was he excited to be in a school play this season dressed as a car?

The Regina and Rome plot was okay this week. I’m getting mighty curious about the teenager who is hanging out – my gut feeling is that he’s some sort of con artist, although he has been at least a bit useful. I’m glad that something good came of Rome’s movie in that maybe those connections can save the restaurant.

Definitely the best part of this episode was Maggie and Jamie! Such a rookie mistake for Maggie to not have previewed her podcast before uploading it and for not noticing how long it was/how big the file was! OTOH, what a perfect opportunity to finally get some closure on her relationship with Gary – for both of them!

I love how laid back Jamie is about everything – he doesn’t get upset about things and always looks for the humor in a situation. I wish I had more of those traits! I’m still wondering how likely it is that both Maggie and Jamie are going to make it back to the UK after her screening.

I’m going to be honest – this show is not currently bringing me “joy” and I’m resisting the urge to “Marie Kondo” it with each new episode. I really hope that something dramatic changes before I lose interest entirely!

Rueben:

I have to agree with your thoughts, Cay, as it was rough watching this episode given how far we are now from those early days of the pandemic. I don’t want to see every episode be a repeat of all the things we did and had to go through in those early months.

I also don’t like – at all – the path Eddie is taking! I completely agree with how pissed Katherine was, but for Dakota to take the blame and Eddie to just let her, even yell at her in front of Katherine – when he is the culprit behind it all. This is going to bite him in the ass, and just devastate their whole lives. And, I want to see Eddie get better, but I think it’s all a little too late. The truth is going to come out, and it’s not going to go well for him at all.

The whole interaction between Darcy, Liam and Gary just seems to me like they (the writers) are forcing us to like them as a couple, and to find a way for Liam to like Gary, have common ground with Gary. I’ve never been a fan of Darcy and Gary as a couple and their scenes were just “blah” for me. I was a bit moved by Darcy revealing to Gary the true reason behind in nightmares; that reveal made me feel a little “something” toward Darcy; but not enough.

Jamie and Maggie were the only bright spot out of the whole episode. The whole sitting on the toilet moment and their saying “Dude” to each other. Quite funny! The whole screw up with the podcast was to be expected, I guess; and it’ll drive what we saw in the clip for next week’s episode for sure.

I liked that Shanice did that video for the restaurant – that was a great support to them; but Tyrell, the teenager, is seriously hiding something from them about his mom. Is she even real? Does he actually live in a home for runaway kids? What is really going on there? His explanation to Rome about his EMT mother not being able to find a job and that lame excuse about hurting her ankle. Really?

I feel like this whole season has been a “jump the shark” moment; and this all hearkens back to season 1 when we kept asking why Ashley even in the storyline. I feel that way about nearly everything in the show now, and I really don’t want to feel that way. I want the show back, coz it doesn’t feel like the show anymore.
