Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist: “Zoey’s Extraordinary Trip”

By  |

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘s aired a new episode from its second season this week. Let’s first find out what this episode was about.

Here is a synopsis for this week’s episode entitled “Zoey’s Extraordinary Trip“:

Zoey decides to explore her rebellious side with her neighbor from growing up, Aiden (guest star Felix Mallard). Max’s dad (guest star Chip Zien) comes to visit.

Join Nice Girls Roz, Karen,, and Rueben as they share their thoughts on this latest, new episode of the second season [spoiler alert]:

Roz: I find high!Zoey to be a hilarious conceit, but I also love that we got “Starships” in this week’s songlist. (This is my favorite video to that song ever!) Her honesty to Danny Michael Davis is what she’s best at, but I also know that her empathy is at the heart of the show’s core.

The secondary storyline about the racial problems with the Chirp to be really poignant in the wake of racial injustice for centuries.

However, I don’t love that Chip Zien is in the episode but doesn’t get to sing a song.

Rueben: I can’t say that this was my favorite episode because it wasn’t. There were a few scenes that I enjoyed, but I’m never a big fan of any episode or show that includes any kind of drug use. That kind of behavior just isn’t acceptable to me. I’m too much of a control freak to ever be okay with that in real life let along on the small (or large) screen.

I felt bad for Max in worrying over his dad’s visit, making an impression on his dad, fretting over his dad listening to his and Mo’s business pitch and then not really getting support from his dad for his and Mo’s business. I did love the name of the business venture, though. Maximo, a combination of their names. I just hope they can find an investor (or two) who will see the worth of their business and really want to support them.

I found the behavior displayed by Roger, Maggie’s landscaping client, to be immature and simply childish. So Maggie turned you down for a date? Get over yourself! Jenna’s reaction was priceless, but what she did to Roger was unprofessional, and I agree that Maggie had no choice but to fire here. What she did was out of line (sure, it was funny and great in a “let’s get revenge way,” but it wasn’t the right thing to do).

I loved that Mo made the Olivia Pope reference toward Tatiana; and I hope they include Tatiana in more episodes; and given what Simon said at that press conference over the problems with the “Chirp” not recognizing people of color, I have a feeling Tatiana will have quite a story to cover for Wired Magazine. I just wonder what kind of fallout Simon – and Zoey and everyone at the office – will face. I agree that change needs to be made, and it would be great to see if the show actually addresses the problem instead of just sweeping it around the rug or finding a less than suitable compromise.

Karen: I agree 100% Rueben. I’ve had a terrible experience with a family member being addicted, so it rubs me the wrong way to show them as “fun”. It almost ruined the episode for me. And I liked Aiden before this ep, and now I don’t know what to do with him. I never wanted him to be an alternate love interest, but she could always use another friend.

I also hated that our female coders had no idea who the OWNER OF SPRQ Point. Really? Who works for a company and isn’t familiar with the CEO? Where are the smart nerd girls that I wanted? And where is their storyline?

I’m also already a little tired of the drama around Max & Mo’s restaurant. I enjoyed the dynamic between Max and his father, but turning down his money? I mean, it’s green and they need it. He can still tell dad that he’s unhappy with their relationship. But that’s just me I guess.

The *only* redeeming part of “Trip” was the Simon/Tatiana thing. Any time we can shine more light on an under-reported social issue like facial recognition of PoC, I’m a cheerleader. Season Two Simon is one of the best characters.

Can we get Zoey back together with Max already? We waited a whole season and we got ONE DAY with them as a couple.

I was sad about Maggie’s part this week as well. Totally out of character to have her fire Jenna over one incident. They were a nice team, and to have this as the way Jenna exited was just wrong.

So after writing this review, it looks like I really didn’t like this episode. They need to step it up, but I’m still a huge fan. Musical numbers were A+ even if the ep wasn’t great.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist will air its next new episode on NBC on Tuesday, February 9 at 8/7c. It will be the last episode before an extended hiatus.

Simon wrestles with his future at SPRQ Point after calling out racial bias at the company. Mo and Max pitch a new investor for their business venture.

Roz lives in the Los Angeles area, and has been a long time California girl. Despite her better judgment, she enjoys shows about the shallow sides of her home city, but will also find time to watch iZombie, Jane the Virgin, and much more. With a love of history, she also watches anything that is grounded in real life, including Victoria and black-ish. Having worked with children, she also follows shows she knows they watch (reminding her of those days of yore for her in the process). Contact her at roz@nicegirlstv.com.
