Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist: “Zoey’s Extraordinary Dreams”

By  |

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘s second season is off and running! Let’s see how we feel about the third episode of this NBC show.

Here is a synopsis for this week’s new episode entitled “Zoey’s Extraordinary Dreams

Zoey is haunted by bad dreams that start to affect her personal life; Jenna helps Maggie find her creative spark again.

Join Nice Girls Roz, Karen, and Rueben as they share their thoughts on the season two episode [spoiler alert]:

Roz: This was a rollercoaster of an episode! I feel like Zoey’s ability to hear heartsongs keeps her from sharing so many of her own emotions to everyone else and that was so obvious in the episode.

Max is a great guy, but he very much makes me leery right now. I know that grieve can bring people together, but Zoey’s so emotionally off limits that trying to start this relationship isn’t going to work well.

That said, I want to say that all these songs this week were killer.

“One Call Away” from Jenna made me feel for her so much – and how much she’s not understood by her sister.

Rueben: I agree, the songs for each person (or group, in terms of the brogrammers) was spot-on. I just wish that Mo had a song to sing about the break-up with the boyfriend. We got to see inside how each of them (Maggie, Jenna and Max) are feeling right now. And, seeing Zoey so unhinged in her nightmare was kinda heartbreaking. She’s obviously battling herself – given that she blocked herself from leaving the front door of her apartment in her last nightmare – but is there more to her nightmares than just dealing with the levels of grief over losing her dad? She’s got a lot of stress from work and trying to hold onto her relationship with Max on top of her dad’s death. By stepping back, or taking a pause, with Max, well, will that be enough or will the nightmares get worse? If she could open up to Max, maybe that would help. I just don’t want to see their relationship sore completely. I adore the two of them together.

Jenna actually did help Maggie with her first landscaping job since her husband’s death, and that’s great. I just think that David and Emily need to come clean with Jenna about their feelings toward her, and vice versa. Jenna isn’t a dumb woman, I’m sure she can feel some of her sister’s ire, and vice versa. This episode was filled with moments where each character just needed to talk it all out, instead of holding back. I wrote in my notes that they all just needed to talk to each other!

Zoey’s final words of, “what now?” says it all, though, doesn’t it? Where do she and Max go now? What now will happen with her nightmares? Will Emily and David just open up with Jenna? Will Maggie continue to have success with this new project at work? And, it was so great to see Rob Stewart (who eagle eye viewers of Killjoys will remember as Dutch’s “father” Khylen) as Maggie’s client.

Karen:

This week we’re all on the same page. There were definite highs and lows this week. And as you said Rueben, the episode’s theme this week was a miscommunication. Each of the storylines had a form of it one way or another. Max and Mo, The Brogrammers vs. The Codesses, Jenna and Emily & David, Zoey and Max, Zoey and her team, everything dealt in incongruence.

I know Mo’s having a hard time right now, and it showed in his discussion with Max. If that relationship gets sandpapery, it’ll probably be my least favorite story beat each week. The space they were looking at was AWESOME looking.

I’m not surprised that the Brogrammers are doubling down on the misogyny. Leif needs to put a stop to it. The jersey was a nice chuckle to my 13-year-old self though.

I liked Jenna MUCH more this week. I can see where that type of personality would be irritating to a couple like Emily & David, and it’ll probably be good to involve her somewhere else so she can stay to help out with the baby and still be out of their hair. I understand her character better now that we see a bit more of her.

How awesome is it to see Maggie with a smile on her face? With help from Jenna, she was a total baws this week. And hello? Silver Fox alert. I know Rob Stewart from Suits, and more recently, an episode of Schitt’s Creek. (He can drive at night, you know)

I’m definitely feeling all the nostalgia feels for Zoey when we see her in her new role at SparqPoint. And not in a great way. I know how frustrating it is to manage a team as a woman in a man’s industry. Honestly, that part of the show is a tiny bit *too* realistic for me. Cringy. Not a bad storyline though. One ask from me is to see more from the women on the team. So far, we’re getting the “woman power” message, but not much of an outlook from their viewpoint.

And lastly, Max and Zoey. NOOOOoooooo…. I don’t want to do this “let’s get them together and then break them apart immediately” thing. Please? Ugh. Can we let them have like, maybe three episodes before we give them angst? I have faith in the showrunners though, so I’m definitely keeping my mind open.

Can’t wait for next week!

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist will air its next new episode on NBC on Tuesday, January 26 at 8/7c.

Karen Lindsay, often teased as being "obscurely famous," talks a lot. (i.e. she podcasts). Her current and past projects involve television shows like "Chuck", "Castle", "Orphan Black", "Farscape", "Supergirl", "Lucifer" and many others. She's an avid gamer, reader, & collector of all things shiny - and while you may not think those things go hand-in-hand, they sometimes do. So don't ask her about how many pets she has in Warcraft. (or how shiny they are).
