Good Witch Recap: “The Dream”

By  |

A new episode of season 6 of Good Witch aired on the Hallmark Channel last night, focusing on:

Sam successfully operating on Adam but not without complications. Joy dreamed that Abigail and Donovan broke up; and, against Cassie’s advice, tried to stop it from happening. Meanwhile Martha was vying for the ardor of a French delegation that was in Middleton to determine if their two cities were meant to be “sister cities.”

Let’s break down what took place in the episode:

Sam, Adam and Stephanie

On the morning of Adam’s spine surgery, Sam was taking a moment of solitude to play his guitar in the kitchen and then joked with his wife about her not making him any blueberry muffins for breakfast; which couldn’t be further from the truth as the oven chimed and he got his sweet snack.

A short time later at the hospital, Adam was wheeled into surgery (with Stephanie right by his side) but more than three hours later, she was worried about why Sam hadn’t arrived to give her details on Adam’s condition. Soon enough, surrounded by her friends (Martha, Cassie, Joy and Abigail), Sam arrived in the waiting room to give Stephanie the good news that Adam “did great” in his surgery.

Later that day she was able to go back to Adam’s room to wait for him to wake up; and once he did, Sam arrived to give him a “test drive,” checking his eye, feet and hand movements. He had no problem passing the first two but when it came to his right hand (the hand that caused him problems before the surgery), he couldn’t squeeze Sam’s hand. That was disconcerting for both Adam and Stephanie, but Sam assured them it would just take time for the swelling from his surgery to lessen. Much later in the day, Stephanie returned to Adam’s room, taking his right hand in both of her hands, and he was able to squeeze her hand back. Hopefully that meant he was on the road to a quick recovery.

Martha and the French Delegation

As briefly mentioned in last week’s episode, Martha was expecting a delegation of people from France for a visit to Middleton. That delegation arrived in town with the intention of determining whether their hometown and Middleton could become sister cities.

Martha being Martha tried a bit too much, trying to make Middleton just a bit too much French-inspired; but thankfully she was set straight and with a bit of help and magic courtesy of Joy and Abigail, they transformed the Bistro Cafe from its French-themed decorations to a much more Americanized “stars and stripes” all-you-can-eat buffet.

That won the French Delegation over and their leader, Henri, announced to the amassed residents that Middleton would become their town’s sister city, presenting Martha with a key to their city. In return, after an assist from Cassie, Martha presented a shiny Bicentennial half dollar (that she unexpectedly acquired from a vending machine purchase at the hospital while waiting for Adam’s surgery to be completed) in a fancy little box.

That little fete culminated with Sam and Stephanie replacing the french-themed entertainment Martha had to cancel. Sam played his guitar while Stephanie sang the Carole King song “You’ve Got a Friend,” while he boyfriend Adam watched from the front row via Cassie’s iPad.

Joy, Abigail and Donovan

While waiting to learn about Adam, Joy quietly revealed to Cassie that she had a dream about Abigail and Donovan breaking up under a crescent moon; and given that many of her dreams have come true in the past, she wanted to forewarn them. Cassie wasn’t too keen on the idea, but given the silly argument that Joy witnessed Abigail and Donovan having had over his temporarily missing phone and its dead battery, she felt it was imperative that she tell them the truth.

That revelation wasn’t lost on them since a crescent moon was expected to appear that night; and that set the two lovebirds on the path to find another clue about the Davenport-Merriwick curse. They returned to the “scene of the crime” – the Davenport Mansion – to find anything that could help them.

While in the hidden library of Roderick Davenport, Abigail snapped a picture of a crescent moon on a wagon depicted with a huge painting; and that urged Donovan and Abigail to do as much research as they could, but – just like the monocle from last week – they were left stumped until they, as well as Joy, went to Cassie for some help.

Cassie immediately identified the wagon as that belonging to a traveler, someone who was known for casting curses; and someone who Roderick obviously used to help him enact the curse since he would not have been able to create it on his own. Cassie also told them that they would have to find someone from that traveler’s family to see if that person could help them break the curse.

Cassie

Elsewhere, Cassie had her first day of teaching art history at the local college, getting to know a couple of her students really well during the process. She had her class meet her at the museum rather than in the classroom, teaching those students a valuable lesson in perspective in reference to a particular piece of art. One student, Zack, seemed to take it to heart while the other, Sydney, approached it a bit too clinically. They both received the same grade on their “paper” for that class; and, of course Sydney (being the more studious of the two) was none too happy; but in the end, she returned to the museum to look at the painting again, gaining her own perspective. She shared with Cassie this time around that after looking at the painting – and not using her research skills but rather her personal experiences – she remembered going to her very first Broadway play with her dad and how they had such a great time in Central Park with him, talking about the play. Perspective lesson learned!

George and Samantha

A nice little story also played out for George and Samantha, the nurse at the hospital – from the Halloween movie Curse From a Rose. As a reminder, she was to be the actual recipient of that four-leaf clover from her fiancee, who was tragically killed a mere few days before their marriage many, many decades ago.

Sam had inadvertently (or not) ended up with Cassie’s iPad that morning, which she needed at the college; so George was dispatched to retrieve it for her. Samantha, of course, was holding onto the iPad at the nurse’s station and she and George had an amusing “meet cute” over that little device.

Later on, they had another little encounter at the vending machine at the hospital, with George rushing away only to have the identical conversation at the fete at the Bistro Cafe that evening with a better result: George didn’t rush off this time.

Sad Ending

In the final scenes, Abigail and Donovan were alerted to an even bigger break in the ruby by Martha after she placed the key to their French sister city away for safe keeping. It would seem they had no other choice but to – sadly – break up in order to stop the crack in the ruby from getting worse. It was clear that Joy was very sorry for the heartbreak this caused her cousin and Abigail was clearly upset that they had to do it in order to give them enough time to figure out how to break the curse before the crack in the ruby became permanent.
