Good Witch Recap: “The Graduation”

By  |

The season finale of Good Witch aired on Sunday night, bringing the popular Hallmark Channel series to a close for its fifth season.

The main focus of the episode, as its title inferred, was the graduation of Grace Russell and Nick Radford as well as the rest of their classmates at Middleton High School. As we learned last week, Grace learned that she was valedictorian, having to prepare her commencement speech. She presented her speech concisely with her typical good humor, enthusiasm and a few words of wisdom for someone so young. It was obviously emotional for their mothers to get a little teary-eyed as both teenagers walked across that stage to get their diplomas, and received accolades from their family members.

The obligatory celebration at Grey House featured a beautiful cake made with lots of love by Grace’s mom Cassie with lots of gifts and money changing hands for the proud and excited graduates. One of the gifts received by Grace was the town’s wishing well encased inside a snow globe from Mayor Martha Tinsdale – as a way for Grace to always remember her hometown – and the best game design system on the planet was given to Nick by his dad and mom.

On the romance front, Donovan gave Abigail a very pretty gift, telling her he loved her; but all she could say in return was, “thank you.” Not exactly what he was hoping to hear nor was it exactly what Abigail was thinking, but she couldn’t seem to say the words back to him. The problem was she could easily say “love you” to both Nick and Grace in a video message – recorded by Cassie’s foster brother Vincent, who returned to town just in time for graduation night. It was apparent on Donovan’s face that he was upset with how easily she could say those words to Nick and Grace, but not to him.

Matters were only made worse at the end of the episode when, try as she might, Abigail was incapable of saying, “I love you” to Donovan. She even had those three little words spelled out in rose petals on her couch, but thanks to an inappropriately opened window even that romantic gesture by Abigail failed. It would seem that the Merriwick-Davenport curse has raised its evil head to dash their romantic pursuits.

Elsewhere in the story, Sam wasn’t giving up on finding the Middelton treasure, attempting to figure out what that discovered, old-fashioned key opened. After Grandpa George was finally able to get a 200-year old safe opened – acquired from Mrs. Hanson the local seamstress who helped Grace create a delicate lace dress for graduation (a surprised gift from her mom Cassie) – Sam found yet another clue, written in Latin, that led him and Cassie to the undergound tunnels of Middleton. Using symbols found on an old fireplace salvaged from the town’s former Meeting Hall, Sam and Cassie FINALLY unearthed the Middleton treasure: a music box that had been long rumored to belong to Nathaniel and Meredith Merriwick, the founders of Middleton. But there was much more to the music box than just playing a lilting melody. When the music stopped playing, three hidden drawers opened up. One of those drawers contained a giant emerald, but the other two drawers were empty; however, Martha uttered in voice over that the “diamond and ruby” were missing. It’s unclear how she would have known that the box contained a diamond and ruby, but I guess that will be the mystery to solve in season six.

After graduation, Nick headed to New York to spend the next three months with his mom before leaving for college in California while for Grace, after a three-month time jump in the story, Cassie was arriving home to Grey House after dropping Grace off at Wellingsley, making it an empty next for her and Sam. This will be a new chapter for the newlyweds and for the show.
