Women Behind the Scenes Spotlight: Michelle Ricci

Today’s Women Behind the Scenes spotlight is focused on TV screenwriter, series creator and producer Michelle Ricci.

Michelle was born in Canada and later lived in Los Angeles. She got her start working as a production assistant on The WB series Smallville. When she discovered the popular Canadian series Murdoch Mysteries, she went back home to Canada, enrolling in the Canadian Film Centre’s Prime Time TV Program (an exclusive, very selective program where she crossed path with Peter Mitchell, the showrunner for Murdoch Mysteries.

That led to Michelle working for a number of season on Murdoch Mysteries from 2012 through 2017, wearing various hats like writer, executive story editor, producer, consulting producer, co-producer and eventually co-executive producer. During those years she also wrote an episode of the Canadian drama The Listener and was a creative consultant on the web series Inhuman Conditions.

Starting in 2017, she became the writer of many of the Hailey Dean Mysteries movies on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, starting with Dating Is Murder. In 2018, she wrote A Will to Kill, A Marriage Made for Murder and 2 + 2 = Murder; and this year she was responsible for Killer Sentence, A Prescription for Murder and Death on Duty.

Her current project is Frankie Drake Mysteries, which U.S. viewers can see on Ovation on Saturday nights. She co-created the show with Cal Coons and Carol Hay, and worn several hats including writer and executive producer.  The next two episodes of the second season of Frankie Drake can be seen on Saturday, August 3.
