Comic-Con 2019: Preview “Night”

By  |

The Wednesday of San Diego Comic-Con is dubbed “Preview Night” although the fun is starting earlier and earlier every year. The Nice Girls kicked things off with a press preview of the Amazon activation (amazing!), a visit to the Exhibit Hall (goodies!), and screenings of a couple of new shows. Read on for the report from Comic-Con Preview Night!

Earlier in the day, many of the outside “activations” – elaborate activities set up to promote various shows – were available to the press before they open to the public on Thursday. A group of us spent most of the afternoon in the Amazon Prime Video “compound”, which took up a big chunk of a city block.

Inside, Amazon was promoting three of their new and continuing shows – Carnival Row, The Boys, and The Expanse. Like last year, no expense was spared – the activities for each show were like walking onto the set of the shows themselves – we got to interact with very detailed scenes complete with actors playing out stories around us of which we became a part. The activations for The Boys and The Expanse were escape-room type challenges where Carnival Row was more like an immersive theater experience.

Later, during official Preview Night, I checked out the pilots for the new shows Warner Brothers shows Batwoman (on the CW in October) and Pennyworth (on Epix later this month). I enjoyed both shows – I think Batwoman in particular will be popular.  Then I walked through the exhibit hall a bit.

In the Exhibit Hall, Roz checked out this Game of Thrones build from Mega Construx. Gorgeous!

Lisa

Today in Totally Random, I met Fluffy (aka Gabriel Iglesias) on the exhibit floor! He is one of my favorite comedians. He has several comedy specials on Netflix and he is also known as the DJ in Magic Mike and Magic Mike 2.

While I was in the Exhibit Hall, I checked out the booth for The Dark Crystal which was really cool. They had props from The Dark Crystal (the OG movie) as well as trailers for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and you received a bracelet that you could scan throughout the booth for fun interactions. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance premieres August 30 on Netflix.

I also caught a screening of Batwoman in Ballroom 20 and it was really good. I am a huge fan of Ruby Rose and she did a great job of carrying the pilot as well as stepping into the Batwoman character. It was really interesting to see the background of how and why she becomes Batwoman, questions that are answered in the pilot. I also liked that they touched on homosexual issues because she is a lesbian and I really liked that they have that aspect on the show. The cast is diverse and great support system for Ruby Rose to shine.

Batwoman premieres October 6, 2019, on the CW.
