Do You Remember: The Nine

By  |

The short-lived ABC drama The Nine – created by Hank Steinberg [the creator of the CBS drama Without a Trace and co-creator of the TNT drama The Last Ship] and produced by Warner Bros. Television – debuted in October of 2006.

The premise of the show was focused on nine people, mostly strangers to each other, who became linked together when they were held hostage in a bank robbery gone wrong. In each episode, the viewers learned new details of the 52-hour standoff, of which only brief snippets were shown.

The pilot episode established the events which were to be embellished throughout the rest of the series. Two armed men, brothers Lucas Dalton and Randall Reese (Owain Yeoman from The Mentalist and Jeffrey Pierce from Bosch and Castle Rock) entered the bank, and quickly restrained both the security guard and an off-duty police officer. After the end of the standoff, the former hostages arranged a meeting with one another in an effort to stay in touch and help each other. Various characters also formed relationships apart from the group and maintained regular contact with each other during the week, while others were connected through relationships that predated the events in the bank.

The official debut of The Nine was on October 4, 2006, but it was taken off the schedule the following month. In March of 2007, ABC announced that while the rest of the 13-episode debut season MIGHT be aired over the following month, the show was cancelled due to poor ratings. The cancellation was made official in May of 2007. The Nine was revived in August of that year, but only aired two episodes before it was pulled from the air again. It wasn’t until two years later that DirecTV announced a deal was made with Warner Bros. to show all of the episodes on their Audience Network.
