THE ROOKIE Roundtable: “Crash Course”

By  |

John Nolan (Nathan Fillon) had a rough start to his day – a runaway bride and more damage to their car than necessary with many other twists. Let’s see what the Nice Girls had to say about The Rookie‘s second episode, Crash Course.

THE ROOKIE – “Crash Course” – Talia forces Nolan to confront his personal moral instincts in order to be a good cop after he encounters a kidnapping victim. Meanwhile, Lucy is temporarily placed with a new training officer who tests her patience, and Jackson must confront his failures head-on if he wants to be an officer, on “The Rookie,” airing TUESDAY, OCT. 23 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. BRITTANY ROSS

Let’s dig into the new episode with our new feature: S(tupid), A(wesome), S(o) S(o) and Y(our Thoughts):

STUPID

Roz: I’m all for a cop having a bad day with the car, but this constant damage seemed like way too much! There’s a joke and then there’s weirdly overused damage for a laugh (we didn’t need that sort of joke when everything else was at stake).

Leah: I really liked the first episode but this show quickly went to all of the TV cliches that annoy me. See Roz and Rueben’s answers for the two big ones that had me groaning.

Rueben: C’mon, Nolan! You go into that house without backup? You go into that small room, keeping your back to the door? What was he thinking? Has he never watched a cop show in his life? He’s not just playing acting at the job, he’s living it, and he should have been thinking quicker on his feet than that.

Also, how did Chen not figure it out that Bradford arranged for her to be “stuck” with Rigley as her temporary TO; and yet it was so great to see the surprise on her face when she finally figured it out.

AWESOME

Roz: I’ll miss that old 70s car after all the work Bishop did at the end. It was an odd joke that didn’t feel bad (though I could have used without as much damage around this week’s episode).

Leah: I’m going with Jackson West finally getting his stuff together….mostly.

Rueben: Watching Bishop back up that crap-tastic cop car, ramming it into the house of that kidnapper AFTER all of the accidents that Nolan had during the episode, and that ending where they are back in a brand new “shop” and then Nolan rear-ends some truck!

SO SO

Roz: I need more character development from everyone; right now I don’t care for anyone (much) and I should. It’s just a vehicle (haha!) to show me around LA and what weird situations cops find themselves in. If I wanted that, I might as well ask my cousin.

Leah: Do I know the show is called The Rookie, sure. Do I think they are putting the rookies in such unrealistic situations that it is almost comical (when it shouldn’t be) sure. I’m going to need this show to do some evening out.

Rueben: West did better in this episode, but I think it was all a show of machismo because he didn’t have to really pull his actual weapon. Will he be able to step up with his gun the next time he is put into that situation?

YOUR THOUGHTS

Roz: I want to meet Nolan’s friend at some point; you better get a good big-name guest to be that rich.

Rueben: When are Nolan and Chen going to get caught in their secret affair? Will Grey start giving Nolan a little relief or not? Will we get to see Captain Anderson out in the field or in more than the occasional scene? I’d like to get more back story on her. And how about we get some back story on West, Chen and Nolan at the academy to fill out their stories.

The Rookie airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on ABC. Check out our previous recap here.

Roz lives in the Los Angeles area, and has been a long time California girl. Despite her better judgment, she enjoys shows about the shallow sides of her home city, but will also find time to watch iZombie, Jane the Virgin, and much more. With a love of history, she also watches anything that is grounded in real life, including Victoria and black-ish. Having worked with children, she also follows shows she knows they watch (reminding her of those days of yore for her in the process). Contact her at roz@nicegirlstv.com.
