Her Universe’s Influence at Comic Con

By  |

For the last five years, Her Universe, the company that makes tons of fashionable fannish wear, puts on a great fashion show that shows that fandom fashion is more than cosplay, but haute couture.

This year twenty-four designers sent outfits down the runway, many now including bags and shoes that match the outfit, featuring a dress inspired by The Shape of Water, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Gilmore Girls.

The show is a bit hit, and makes it cool to think about cosplay, or fannish fashion, in a way that isn’t your typical t-shirt.

Her Universe is great at bringing the spirit of a show into something you want to wear every day (and in a way that doesn’t always scream fandom).

This jacket and sweatshirt are great, but not in the same recognizable way as cosplay is, but it’s great to be geeky in public.

Surprising everyone during the fashion show this year was Jodie Whittacker, the new Doctor, who walked the runway in her trench while showrunner, Chris Chibnall, watched. It was a sign of how powerful fashion is that Jodie’s trench is already a sought after item (it was available at the con before it goes on sale later this year), but more than that, the fashion show focuses on how fashion influences us all.

During her brief interview Whittaker make a point of saying that the Doctor’s new fashion shouldn’t just be women’s fashions, but for everyone.

This show makes a point of that too. All the contestants are using their own time to make some truly amazing outfits. See all the winners below as they walked down the runway.

These designs are all about their love for each fandom (The Shape of Water, Howl’s Moving Castle and Alien) and how much all of us can show that off to the world.

If you want to see the outfits in their full movement, check out the show below.

This show inspires me to want more fannish outfits in my life, and maybe one day I can sew something that looks one-tenth of how amazing these are.
