The 100 Recap: “Damocles, Part 2” [Season Finale]

By  |

Watching the season finale of The 100 on The CW last night was quite the emotional journey especially that surprising ending, but let’s first take a look at what lead to that unexpected final scene.

The Battle for Shallow Valley

There was a lot of blood and death in the aftermath of the battle for Shallow Valley. But with the arrival of young Madi, the new Commander, in the fallback position of the remnants of Wonkru, it seemed almost possible to imagine that perhaps they could take down the remnants of the Eligius prisoners. That was made even more possible with Octavia finally doing the first smart thing in quite a while: she bent a knee to Heda [aka Madi]. With Wonkru under the command of Madi they took on McCreary’s people outside of Shallow Valley and succeeded.

Taking Down McCreary

It was very hard for Raven to watch McCreary and his men torture Shaw especially given the fact they had her securely tied down that she could barely move. But when McCreary attempted to amputate one of Shaw’s legs [gross!], she caved, telling McCreary that she would fly the drop ship.

Except those plans didn’t go exactly go as McCreary envisioned because of Clarke, whose allegiance to any one side has been very questionable of late. Thankfully, she was working against McCreary and he was finally taken down, allowing Raven and Shaw to take over the reins of the drop ship, but not before McCreary dropped the Damocles weapon from the Eligius on the last remaining habitable patch of Earth.

Escaping Earth

Time was not on the side of anyone left on the planet with that damn weapon quickly falling to Earth. It was a race against time getting the Wonkru survivors to the drop ship as well as Octavia getting Kane and Abby out of Shallow Valley too. With the last remaining seconds ticking by, the final three – Monty, Harper and Murphy – made it to the drop ship and off all of the survivors went up into space to stay on the Eligius as once again the Earth erupted into fire.

Survival on the Eligius

Sure the survivors made it off the planet in just the nick of time, but they weren’t going to survive for long on the Eligius, as there simply wasn’t enough food and water. It was going to take at least 10 years for the Earth to be habitable again so what choices did they have: starve or sleep. Well, there were 500 cryo beds on the ship and it only made sense that the survivors all take a very long nap. They agreed to be awakened 10 years after the Damocles weapon went off with the hopes of being able to return to the Earth.

Best Laid Plans

As the final scenes played out, Clarke and Bellamy were the only two who were woken up. They were greeted by a stranger named Jordan, who turned out to be the son of Harper and Monty. That couple deliberately decided not to use the cryo beds, spending the lives together, watching over everyone else and keeping taps on the Earth.

But the most shocking reveal was that 125 years had elapsed – and we thought that six year jump was a lot at the beginning of this season, right?! Jordan played back recordings that his parents had made over the course of many decades – to be seen by Clarke and Bellamy before any of the other survivors – explaining what happened. Despite the calculations, the Earth didn’t come back to live after 10 years; in fact, it was any better after 28 years. After putting their only son into cryo sleep, Monty and Harper had a long live together in which Monty finally figured out what the Eligius 3 mission was really searching for. It wasn’t a mining mission but a mission to find another habitable planet. And even better, Monty found it and set the Eligius on a course to get there, but it took 75 years to reach the new planet with two suns.

As Clarke and Monty looked toward that new planet that could hold so many possibilities, it was also a moment filled with regret that they would never see their friends Monty and Harper again.

What did you think of the finale? Were you shocked by the 125 year time jump? Were you upset to learn that Monty and Harper chose to stay out of the cryo beds? Please share your thoughts on the finale below.

The 100 will be back for its sixth season on The CW sometime during the midseason of 2019.
