HEROES REBORN: “June 13th – Pt. 1” or “Save the Cheerleader’s Children, Save the World” [Discussion]

By  |

Heroes from the past come together to save the future in this week’s episode of Heroes Reborn. In an effort to get answers, Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman) joins forces with Hiro Nakamura (guest star Masi Oka) to return to the day of the tragic events of June 13, 2014 that set everything in motion. On the verge of delivering a speech to commemorate the event, Mohinder Suresh (guest star Sendhill Ramamurthy) receives a dire message from Angela Petrelli (guest star Cristine Rose) about Erica Kravid’s (Rya Khilstedt) true motives. In Japan, Hachiro Otomo (guest star Hiro Kanagawa) makes a calculated move against Hiro Nakamura. Meanwhile, a much happier Luke (Zachary Levi) and Joanne (Judi Shekoni) come to Odessa in hopes of finding a cure to their son’s ailment. Robbie Kay also stars.

It was pretty exciting to see some of the old guard return in this mini-series. Liz, Lee Ann, Mel and Cay talk about it in this week’s roundtable.

JUNE 13TH – PART ONE Discussion

1. We now know that Claire’s babies are Malina and Tommy/Nathan. Was that revelation a nice surprise for you?

Cay: I totally didn’t see that coming until a few minutes before the reveal. Pretty cool twist! Also points out how estranged Noah and Claire must have been for him to not know that she was pregnant with twins. However, it created way more questions than it answered. Why did that guy Noah from the future ran into say Claire was coming to the event, when one would assume that he would know that she was 9 months pregnant with twins?! And where is their father? Why was Claire giving birth and apparently dying alone at a hospital right next to the big event?

I did get a bit confused about that scene with the nurse from the hospital, the cupcake, and Nathan/Tommy. That nurse looked like the maternity nurse. How did she go home and end up being Tommy/Nathan’s mother? Not who we met as his mother before and she called him Nathan, not Tommy. Did Noah from the future’s appearance change the timeline? If so, how will Tommy and Malina find each other?

Liz: I think it hit me who they were when the nurse mentioned that the babies were fine. It became clear to me that that would be the reason why Malina is supposed to find Tommy.

Rueben: As soon as the woman at the hospital said, the children were saved, my radar went up and as soon as they showed the twins, I thought, “Oh, wait a minute…” My theory was, obviously, quickly revealed as right; but I do have to say it was still a surprise.

2. Angela’s vision only revealed one child saving the world. Why do you think that both Tommy and Malina have powers then? If only one can save the world, what will the other do?

Cay: I am hoping that her vision doesn’t mean one of them dies trying to save the world and one of them actually does it. Maybe they somehow do it as one? Fuse their powers ALA Firestorm? or maybe Angela’s vision isn’t exactly fate.

Liz: I think we saw from Angela’s vision that it would be Malina who would cause the earth to regenerate. Maybe Tommy is supposed to get rid of Phoebe, since she has the power to render Emos powerless? Or maybe Angela’s vision means the twins will have to work together as one.

Rueben: I kind of like Cay’s idea about Malina and Tommy/Nathan forging into one ala Firestorm. Overall, though, I think they will have to figure out how to work together, combining their abilities to save the world.

3. What kind of world do you think Erica is building for the future?

Cay: Not one I’d like to live in. She’s got some psychological issues, I think it’s generally called “evil”. It seems that her true colors have been revealed! And can I mention how awful it was that she used Quentin’s sister to suppress everyone’s powers by threatening to hurt Quentin, then set off the bombs, and then later Quentin is killed by his own sister when he goes to rescue her? We’re talking pretty darn evil here

Liz: It’s odd that she hasn’t been seen providing a way out of the destruction for anyone except Evos. And as we’ve seen, she has made sure that she is the sole power in the future she’s building. I don’t think I’d like to live in her world though. She’s either evil or deranged. Or both!

Rueben: Her world will definitely not be sunshine and roses; and I, too, would not want to live in it. Erica is definitely evil and deranged. There is no doubt about that.

4. Which character from the original series were you most excited about seeing in this week’s episode?

Cay: I never watched the original series, so didn’t really matter to me!

Liz: Mohinder, of course! I was excited to see what part he played in this new series.

Rueben: I think I was more excited about Hiro being back in last week’s episode than seeing Mohinder or Angela. I was quite curious to see what really transpired to cause Mohinder to be considered the terrorist behind the bombings, though.
