Women Behind the Scenes Spotlight: Emily Silver

Emily Silver NEW

Today’s Women Behind the Scenes spotlight is shone on writer and series creator Emily Silver.

Emily started out like many other TV viewers of the 90’s, being a fan of the acclaimed series Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and developing a love of all things Joss Whedon. In fact, she loved Buffy so much that she emulated her idol by getting her own brown belt in tae kwon do. Emily eventually went off to college where she took a screenwriting class that got her started on the path of her current career: writing for television.

After college, Emily moved to Los Angeles and got her start working as part of the production staff on the short-lived 2007 TV series Dirty Sexy Money. She then landed a job as a production assistant on Brothers & Sisters, thanks in part to Buffy alum Marti Noxon, who helped her get the job.

Over the course of the next two TV seasons, Emily worked as a production assistant on Ugly Betty and the short-lived series FlashForward.

In 2011, she moved into writing, getting a credit on the short-lived TV series No Ordinary Family and she followed that up with writing for The CW remake of Beauty and the Beast for the show’s first season.

It was in 2013 that things changed for Emily as she landed a job on the long-running FOX drama Bones (that, of course, stars Buffy alum David Boreanaz), working as an executive story editor and now a writer. In addition, she wrote a script that was shopped around to ABC Family and MTV with it landing at MTV, becoming the new series Finding Carter, which will return for a second season in 2015 and stars Buffy alum Alexis Denisof.

When talking about her future, Emily has shared that she wants to be the female Joss Whedon, but “since that is Jane Espenson” she will be happy with a career like Jane’s; and she is well on her way if the people she has and is working with is any indication.

Emily loves reading YA literature, has a love of vampires “and the forces of darkness” is a self-professed Whedonite and she can be followed on Twitter @EmilySilver29.

Using her favorite online handle, Rueben is an East Coast-bred gal who is now a permanent Californian and a lifelong tv-oholic. She watches at least 25 TV shows a week, goes to the movies as often as possible, listens to music every waking moment, reads every day and “plays” on the internet every chance she can. Some of her current favorite TV shows are Outlander, Sweet Magnolias, Wednesday, The Mandalorian, The Equalizer, Fire Country, Miss Scarlet, Hudson & Rex, SkyMed, The Rookie, Cobra Kai, Virgin River, The Witcher, Leverage: Redemption and School Spirits. She is looking forward to the long-awaited return of Bridgerton, is curious about the debut of Orphan Black: Echoes and the 3rd and final season of Sweet Tooth coming in June, and the season finales of the abbreviated 2023-2024 TV season.
